My experience: as soon as I start overtaking them they suddenly find the gas pedal.
And then slow down when you go behind them again.
What you have experienced is “I can’t handle curves” syndrome.
This illness shows symptoms of excessively slow maneuvering around curves and turns, followed by quick acceleration into straightaways.
It’s not that. It’s happened on perfectly straight roads as well.
And don’t tell me what I have experienced.
ah, that explains their divorce rates
I live on a mountain road and this ☝️
You should never out-speed your sight line though. Thats basic driving.
I call these “moth drivers” because they are brainless and just follow the lights.
I had one speed up, flip me off and attempt to tail gate me for passing her in her minivan. Karen hair cut. Really came off like she was slowing everyone down on purpose.
I see this as an accurate metaphor for social media users who genuinely think they can deduce someone’s entire personality based on the wording of a comment.
This comic is an excellent depiction of the fundamental attribution error.
fundamental attribution error
except that is not the point of the comic. it is laughing at people who buy wreck on the verge of collapse, because they can now be proud they have a sport car, instead of buying normal car they can afford, would work, be more practical, but doesn’t fulfill their child dream. at least that’s how i see it.
Some people love impractical things. Personally, I’m into sailing.
cool, but i assume you can afford to buy or rent some reliable boat? because if you have to get one that will sink with you in the middle of the ocean, then it is probably better to find another hobby.
I can tell you’re not a boater if you think the only thing that goes wrong while boating is that you sink.
i am definitely not a boater, which doesn’t mean i can’t imagine whole spectrum of problems, but i thought this extreme example will get my point across clearly.
Yeah, but I bet you don’t sail to work.
Or…on the other hand…the yellow is what its driver has dreamed for decades of having, he finally forund for a decent price and now he’s limping home with it to get it looking and running good. If the genius couple behind him were observant enough to see the hand-written in-transit sticker with that day’s date on it, they might have a clue.
He is a happy man, no nagging wife( just signed the divorce papers), the car barely works, it is such a hassle to keep running, he spent 11 pm to 12 pm on rain last night working on the car because it didn’t run in soo long that brakes got stuck soo he spends soo much time trying to keep it on road. He changed a part, put it all together, realised a mistake, took it all apart, put it back together, realised another mistake, took it all apart again, put it back together AGAIN just this month
Beats computer touching, he thinks.
There’s nothing wrong with picking a machine that is harder to maintain if it’s more fun to drive or has other benefits, people don’t buy or restore and maintain old sports cars for prestige, they maintain them because they like the machine for what it is.
My bike is harder to maintain than a scooter because it uses foreign parts, has to be kickstarted most of the time, and needs oil every 200 km or so, though it’s still extremely practical. I could sell it for what I paid and buy a scooter and have the dealership take care of maintenance, but I wouldn’t enjoy the experience of driving it nearly as much.
I am looking at buying a much less practical zx-25r, and just keeping this as a backup in case I need to move 3 or more suitcases at once or the new bike isn’t running.
I don’t have a spare tire in the car, so a blown one would definitely mean a missed flight
I mean, a bike is somewhat different problem than a car though. If your bike breaks down while you’re riding it, you’re typically not putting other people in danger and/or inconveniencing them. If your car breaks down while you’re driving it, you might very well put other people at risk and/or inconvenience them.
Also modernish cars overheat too. I’m very much let people enjoy things, but my modern vehicles have also had issues.
It can happen with modern cards, but it’s much less likely. The problem with driving a car with reliability issues is that it can be dangerous for other drivers. And if you need a vehicle on a limited budget, for the price of a junker 70s vette you can buy a 20-year old civic that will likely be much more reliable.
There is a concept called nugget shepherd. It’s a reliable car that’s a daily and you have the shitbox project cars. Also I’m 99% sure most people who drive a c3 Corvette in the modern era (or even when it was new/relevant) didn’t buy it out of necessity. They bought it as a fun car.
Edit: any maintained car shouldn’t overheat unless something leaked or the water pump died. Regardless of age
Edit 2: or failed thermostat or bad fan clutch
It’s not the point of the comic but it’s still an excellent example of the thing the other person said. Fundamental whatever
was he forced to buy unreliable midlife crisis car by some outside factors other than his own decision?
In social psychology, the fundamental attribution error is a cognitive attribution bias in which observers underemphasize situational and environmental factors for the behavior of an actor while overemphasizing dispositional or personality factors. In other words, observers tend to overattribute the behaviors of others to their personality (e.g., he is late because he’s selfish) and underattribute them to the situation or context (e.g., he is late because he got stuck in traffic).
exactly. so read it carefully, think about it for a minute, and then answer the question:
are you saying there were some outside factors that forced the man’s decision to buy the car and it was not in fact his own personality that made the choice?
if the answer is yes, then the comic is indeed an example of quoted bias. the problem is it is clearly not, so… bullshit.
You’re making that exact same fundamental attribution error, just at one layer deeper. Instead of assuming that they’re a bad driver, you’re assuming that it was their personal choice to buy that car. We don’t know anything about their life situation, or their circumstances.
Here’s some example outside factors to ponder:
- Financial issues; it’s the only car they could afford
- They got scammed at an auction via undisclosed mechanical issues and are in the process of correcting the issue
- They’re driving their friend’s car home after taking them to hospital
- The car spontaneously developed this issue out of nowhere
- If they go above 20mph, the bomb will explode
Financial issues; it’s the only car they could afford
which is exactly what i am talking about. if this is the only corvette you can afford, maybe try to think about if you can’t get through life without a corvette. these are not external circumstances, that was your decision.
The car spontaneously developed this issue out of nowhere
They got scammed at an auction via undisclosed mechanical issues and are in the process of correcting the issuenewer, more boring car for the same money would probably have smaller chance to develop such issue
They’re driving their friend’s car home after taking them to hospital
than this applies to the owner and not the current driver, but the principle stays
If they go above 20mph, the bomb will explode
well that would be the most boring movie ever 😆
look, this is not the hill i am prepared to die on. you do you and if you really want to buy such car, i am not going to beat you over your head because of it.
owning midlife crisis car is not a crime, but if i meet this guy on the street, i will definitely think “hey, a midlife crisis car” 🤷♂️
I love how low effort this comment is lol
The joy of rolling down the windows with the heater at full blast on a hot summer day. 😫
Been there, done that. Different type of car though: a 1970s campervan driving up the mountains.
'87 Toyota Camery for me.
Thats why you buy an old bmw, most reliable engines ive ever seen. Huh what is this interesting symphony of cracking and squeeking sounds coming from the back end, oh i think i just lost the whole rear subframe…
Ah, the timing chain slipped out, this should be a quick fix. The manual says to… REMOVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE FIRST!?
And you have to retune the whole engine timing too right cause they relied on the precision of the timing chain so much. But thats mainly a problem on the later i4 based engines(including their v8 which is pretty embarrasing tho i guess nowadays a premium german car having serious problems is just usual). The m52 and m54 are made out of vibranium from my experience and they run like heaven to this day.
Anything before 2018 and was at least moderately taken care of is miles ahead of the new shit on the road.
People have been saying that for years with their own cutoff dates.
I’ve had a 2011 335i for 11 years now, daily driven every day
Very good car
I’ve driven 600km straight over mountain passes with AC blasting, no breaks, and the car just takes it
I’ve got a 2012 Honda, 2016 Ford and a 2003 Pontiac all running strong and paid for. I do the maintenance unless it’s outside my skills, then I pay a mechanic. Cars will last a long time
Same here. Do my own unless it’s too annoying.
Also have a 2007 gmc sierra with over 330,000km, majority of which was gravel logging roads
Old cars master race
Everyone is dealing with something that you don’t know about. Be nice.
People on the road especially. Why do they always honk and yell at others who are clearly having some issue with their vehicle? Like they chose to do that…
If you’re having an issue, put your flashers on and pull to the side.
Just like how you don’t stop to tie your shoe in the middle of the sidewalk or hallway.
Also: Yield does not mean stop.
Pulling over often isn’t an option, and slowing down more can mean losing momentum and not making the next hill or putting yourself in a more dangerous spot.
Also: Yield doesn’t mean you have to stop, but if the other lane is busy you need to do whatever it takes to let the other car go. Including stopping.
Yes but if the other lane is empty and you stop at a yield you should be arrested for attempted insurance fraud.
And put on your damn flashers if you’re having issues instead of complaining that people don’t know you’re having issues.
I disagree with this. Yes, they shouldn’t stop. However, if you hit them then you’re clearly at fault. There could be something forcing them to stop and may not realize it, so you not being prepared for them stopping is on you.
I haven’t hit anyone who did this. But I have been hit by someone behind me because of this.
Me and my passengers got neck braces, the driver behind me had to pay, but the idiot who came to a complete stop at a highway onramp didn’t even know what happened, despite them being the reckless driver.
“Just pull over, call a tow truck, get the car repaired. Duh!”
People need to get to work. To, you know, earn the money to pay for the car repair, and food, and such.
Maybe you’ve never been in a precarious position where there are no easy answers.
I never said anything about a tow truck or repairs. I said move over and put your flashers on.
It’s called being considerate. Just like not tying your shoe in the middle of a hallway.
You’re obviously right, and that’s the issue. No shit I’d pull over if I had the ability. I don’t think most people intend to break down in the middle of the road.
People need to get to work. To, you know, earn the money to pay for the car repair, and food, and such.
This can very well apply to the people behind too.
Anyway, I think “it’s not your fault, but it is your responsibility” applies here.
Personally, I just expect people to have some self-awareness, respect for other people’s time, and respect for the two-ton death machines we’re all driving around. (Slow drivers can be just as much a safety hazard as fast drivers.) In most cases of driving slowly, putting the hazard lights on is enough to fulfill all the above.
As an example of a more extreme case, it’s customary in my area for vehicles slowing traffic where there are few opportunities to pass to pull off the road periodically to relieve the traffic built up behind them. That’s also perfectly understandable.
The leeway can only go so far though. If you get yourself into a situation where you have to be a significant obstacle for other people and don’t at least acknowledge it, it doesn’t matter if you’re working two jobs and only have 15 minutes to drive between them or whatever. It’s your responsibility to make yourself not an obstacle and reasonable for others to take issue with you if you don’t.
Also if there are more than 5 cars behind you on a single lane road, pull over and let them pass.
I was helping someone push their vehicle to the gas station once. People were honking at us like it’d make us move faster. So dumb.
I had to use a donut tire once when I had a flat, can’t go over 35 on those things. Was on the highway. People lost their minds behind me, but I had no other choice, couldn’t afford to call a tow truck at the time. I pulled over regularly to let people pass me and limped it home. Felt really bad about getting in people’s way. I don’t like being perceived because of autism, so of course I had an ugly cry meltdown in my car. There are always two sides to every story and if you jump to conclusions, you’re going to be wrong more than right. We need to breed some fucking compassion in this country.
I had to drive what was normally a 6 hour drive home with my car stuck in 2nd gear! Couldn’t go over about 40. I avoided highways where I could, but if I’d done it the whole way home it would’ve taken me like 18 hours instead of 9. Most people saw the flashers and understood, but some people didn’t seem to understand and honked. I don’t get it. I also don’t like causing inconvenience but am able to logic my way out of it, as that was my only real option, so people were just gonna have to deal with it.
P.S. Usually the donuts can go 55mph, though I do realize it’s possible your car said otherwise, in which case listen to it, but also that’s crazy.
It had it printed on the tire :(
That’s a bummer and weird for sure. All donuts I’ve driven on have been 55.
I had that happen, I parked my bike and got the next 2 drivers to come help, since none of us were moving until this car was out of the way. The gas station was literally 20 feet away on the other side of the intersection tho.
Everyone is dealing with something that you don’t know about
Maybe too personal but shortly after a breakup in 2017 someone flipped me off on the road cause i was a pretty new driver and didn’t notice them signaling to merge in front of me and i cried in a parking lot after.
I didn’t know some tiny thing like that could tip me over on the wrong day and i think about it whenever i feel like blaring my horn at someone or whatever
I use the “thumbs down” move when I’m mad at someone. Hopefully it gets regarded as a mild rebuke.
Yeah, when I was a kid I’d flip people off and whatnot but as I’ve grown older I’ve just realized it usually isn’t worth getting angry. Usually I just don’t even react.
I did get angry when someone else nearly hit a pedestrian, the pedestrian cursed them out in Spanish, then they said, I kid you not, “Calm down, I didn’t see you!” I was on my motorcycle and hollered “No shit you didn’t see them!” Just a crazy thing to say after nearly hitting someone with your 2 ton hunk of hurtling metal.
Most of the time the issue is that they need to text and drive or watch a tiktok while driving.
Sometimes I wish I had a car PA system. Then I realize I would get shot.
Lmao
I drive an old Cadillac that has started stalling when I take highway ramps it makes everyone mad
Carbureted? If so it’s probably a Rochester Quadrajet with vacuum secondaries that have fallen out of adjustment. When they fail they open too fast when you step on the gas, or even get stuck entirely open, and you get a “bog” or lean-out stall
I know a lot about Cadillacs of most generations including the TBI HT engines, DM me if you want help.
fuel cut issues from taking the corner fast enough for the fuel to all go to one side of the tank?
Clogging fuel filter that can’t handle the flow needed to accelerate hard?
I think this is it. I’m going to garage it for the winter because Midwest roads and drop the tank I think there’s hella shit in there.
They must have transferred that engineer to their F1 team since then.
puts on hazards “Jesus, why is everyone cutting me off and getting close. MY CAR ISNT ACTING NORMAL, PLEASE LET ME GET HOME IN PEACE!”
What’s wrong with your car to cause that?
for me it was ice in the turbo. Chevy in their infinite wisdom for the 2015-20 malibus decided to have a sensor in them, and if ice gets in it and it blocks the air flow, it will trip the engine and throw it into a 20% power style mode that won’t clear until you plug a OBD tool into it and clear the errors.
It’s meant as a safety system for the engine and usually resolves itself once you let the ice melt but, it won’t go back to full power or make the light go away until the error is cleared.
When it happens I just flick the hazerds on and run it at whatever speed it lets me actually run it at which is around 20-25 mph
if ice gets in it and it blocks the air flow, it will trip the engine and throw it into a 20% power style mode
See, that’s actually reasonable, put the car in limp mode when it’s not getting the air it should be getting
that won’t clear until you plug a OBD tool into it and clear the errors.
That part is not reasonable.
My experience has been mostly German cars and those usually clear the limp mode when the code is no longer active (i.e it shows up as “intermittent” because it hasn’t happened in the current drive cycle).
So there’s two modes on the Malibu for it, there’s one that says under power on the dash that one will clear itself on its own. It doesn’t actually affect the engine speed at that point.
But usually not long after that heads up on the dash it will turn the check engine light on which at that point Is where you lose most power. So unless you were already close to your destination it was very likely you got both.
I currently own a VW and an Audi, in both of those you can get a CEL that does absolutely jack shit and continues to do absolutely jack shit, OR you can get the actual limp mode, which nearly always clears when the condition triggering it is no longer detected after an engine restart. I think if it’s something that can’t be cleared just by restarting the engine, you also get blinking glow plug or EPC (if petrol) light and that’s pretty rare.
BMW IIRC was similar, Mercedes never gave me limp mode, my older Merc had basically a tractor engine, 700k km to the best of my knowledge and no engine or transmission issues. Sounded like a tractor too
Ok that’s reasonable. I think a lot of people, me included, see more NPCs driving with hazards on for seemingly no reason than pulled off the road with them on
I see people with their hazards on in snowstorm which is the dumbest thing ever because now I can’t tell if you’re braking or turning.
That’s why in normal countries our cars have separate indicators and brake lights.
Here in the U.S. the top brake light is required.
Actually me lol. Damn overheating.
Gotta crank that heat! I had a car that used to overheat, and so it was heat on full blast, all year round. Lemme tell you, driving six hours to Virginia from Jersey in May wasn’t too bad, until I got stuck in traffic. I showed up to my destination absolutely caked in sweat.
Oh yep I know used that trick many times.
I would love to see more of these, but I can’t find them anywhere where I don’t have to sign up for a fucking account.

Not all of them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Edit: Almost forgot about this: https://youtu.be/30oBVLvGbiE
I’ve never once seen a car like this driving less than many miles and decibels above the legal limit.
This gen of Vette is almost exclusively owned by boomers. I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever seen one speed.
Heaven forbid you manage your time wisely and leave plenty of it so a snag doesn’t make you late.
Yeah, no, I’m not more than doubling all my travel times to account for someone potentially slowing me down. Sometimes you just run late. I don’t go to the airport a day early because there might be an accident on the motorway.
Who said anything about more than doubling all your travel times? There will pretty much always be a safe opportunity to pass eventually. Unless you’re going somewhere at rush hour, in which case you’re an idiot if you don’t plan for it.
I don’t go to the airport a day early because there might be an accident on the motorway.
Just go an hour or 2 early in case you blow a tire or something else happens. Hell, there could be a long-ass queue at airport security too. Or is a missed flight really better than an hour or 2 of your time?
can’t believe you’re getting down voted man. I was raised in a household so averse to lateness we’d set our clocks ahead to give the illusion that we’re late. It really isn’t that hard to just give yourself extra time so you can arrive a bit earlier if everything goes right. And by ‘bit’ I do mean like a half hour to an hour. Not that insane ‘a day early’ bs someone else spouted.
I refuse to think that a layperson has their day so heavily packed they can’t even afford half an hour of ‘contingency time’
I don’t have a spare tire in the car, so a blown one would definitely mean a missed flight :P Accounting for traffic is fine and what I hope the original commenter meant, but trying to account for all things that can go wrong and are out of your control is not particularly reasonable. And in the hypothetical scenario of the comic they explicitly state there isn’t a safe period to pass.
I don’t have a spare tire in the car, so a blown one would definitely mean a missed flight :P
That’s why I said an hour or two to spare! You can get the car towed to a workshop and grab a taxi yourself in the meantime. Obviously something like 5 hours to spare would be way too much, unless you’re driving 6-7 hours to the airport to begin with. For me it would usually be more like an hour and a half so I’d start driving ~3-4 hours before the flight.
Personally I don’t want to pay extra for a flexible ticket or whatever and I’m NOT skipping a flight, so I’ll do everything reasonably in my power to make the flight. It’s not like I’m going to be doing much else earlier in the day anyway, if I’m flying somewhere, it’s an occasion and I’m not going to work in the morning lol
And in the hypothetical scenario of the comic they explicitly state there isn’t a safe period to pass.
But there must be one eventually. It is very rare not to get an opportunity to pass sooner or later. If there truly is not, the person driving the overheating car would generally pull over to let people pass.
Though I suppose the hypothetical scenario makes zero sense anyway, because 15 in a 45 is actually more likely to make your car overheat if it’s prone to do so in the first place. The cooling system works better when the radiator is getting air on it.
