It is 1985. I am on Mars. I am fifty-six years old.
Now you’ve reminded me of that Cats review:

Wanna go to the parc to play?
Sure! I’ll meet you there. But boom, I’m a 40 years old kid now.
It was supposed to be easily digestible?

This is so “It’s Such a Beautiful Day” coded I thought it was a Don Hertzfeldt comic
By the time I figured out who I was, I was someone else entirely.
Beautiful, and so relatable. Makes you wonder if the churning chrysalis of a person you used to be was even knowable at all.
Damn. That is simple and beautiful. I’m stealing that.
the missile knows where it was, because it knows where it isn’t.
and it is Friday today, clever girl
GET 👏 EVENING 👏 HOBBIES 👏
Something that challenges you every day, where you can learn things and develop yourself.
Time goes a lot slower when you’re watching yourself progress
Also since I stopped drinking I’ve found that I fell I have so much more time in the evenings, and every weekend feels like a vacation.
I have a friend who says words to the same!
How do people have the energy to do shit after an 8 hour work day? I mean I have a white collar job and only even work 4 days a week, and yet I am always exhausted when I come home and can’t really do much more than doom scrolling
If you can doomscroll, you can play a puzzle. It’s about how you direct your attention.
Social media algorithms have given us all executive dysfunction by hijacking our dopamine systems. This was a deliberate design element, because the greedy bastards know they can milk more profit from us if they can get us addicted to their platforms. Hence we have things like infinite scroll, flashy colors and sounds, ragebait gets promoted to viral status while thought-provoking content gets shadowbanned.
If anyone thinks this was anything but deliberate on the part of major corporations, just read about the recent Meta lawsuits and hearings. This was deliberate on their part, and the rot suffuses the entire industry.
Social media giants should be nationalized as a public utility, given democratic/civic governance, ads should be removed entirely, their wealth invested in ESG endowments, and their maintenance funded by the interest. Oh and they should use a protocol like activity pub to federate amongst themselves.
Lastly, their regional headquarters in other countries must be split off and given to local governance.
Thanks for confirming something to someone who does a physical job 5 days a week. I can’t do shit after and can barely afford to eat and pay bills at the same time…
Feels bad seeing people have hobbies and they even have energy to care about doing them. And the ability to ignore the crushing hellscape humanity has made.
I’ve definitely had that for periods of my life. New job or stress will do it, but also I’m sensitive so even just eating poorly and not exercising will throw everything into a wobble, where I can’t imagine doing anything proactive.
Working time fraud /s
But serious and more legal answer:
If you come home, don’t sit/lay down immediately. Do something in this timeframe and start small.Your brain might say its tired, but its not.
Have you ever been in a boring conversation and couldn’t stop yawning, but then it shifted to something interesting and then very suddenly you’re wide awake?
Or you stumble upon a boring wikipedia article but soon realise you’re reading the whole thing and unable to put it down?
Interest! It exists, it’s out there waiting to catch you via the right hobby
Doom scrolling is draining, not relaxing. At least over time.
I don’t understand why, but even just sitting at a desktop and scrolling on that feels better. Maybe something about feeling like I have more choice rather than passively rubbing my thumb on a glass screen. Idk.
Like I’ll scroll for 45 minutes on my phone and get up feeling like a total loser, but then spending 3 hours fully engaged on my home computer and I feel like accomplished.
Like it’s the start of the weekend and I’m looking forward to going on my computer now.

Its repetition. Doing the same shit over and over makes time merge and rush in unmanageable ways.
Also the older you get, the smaller a day, week, month, and year is in terms of percentage of your experience. I really started to understand this after watching my child develop.
When you’re 4 years old, 2 years is 50% of a lifetime away. When you’re 40, 2 years 5%. When you’re 80, it’s half that, 2.5%.
Time really does start to fly by when it’s a smaller slice of your life.
The brain stores new and exciting experiences better in memory than familiar experiences. The more you remember about a certain period, the slower the passage of time is retroactively perceived about that period.
To young children, every day is full of new experiences and seems like an eternity. To many adults, every day is like any other, full of routines and quickly forgotten.
That’s why time flies faster with age unless you manage to make many new experiences in your life.
TIL time has a halflife
So it’s exactly like Frieren
If your brain soup allows it, enjoy each day for what it gives. Find joy in living, in positive experiences. There will always be negative things to focus on. The older you get, the more negatives there are, because in addition to all the bullshit life throws at you, your body starts betraying you too. But there are good things to be had, to be experienced, every day.
In the words of Emily in Don Hertzfelt’s World of Tomorrow, “Live well and live broadly. You are alive and living now. Now is the envy of all of the dead.”
Yup, a great little Alan Watts bit about this animated by the creators of south park: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERbvKrH-GC4
Damn 19 years ago, I’m in the abyss lol
Alan Watts is a treasure
It’s all about the moments worth living for. Snuggle with your cat? Play with the pupper? Something else you love?
Those are the good times at any age.
Do art. Hobbies. …
I remember the good moments by recalling what I was eating at the time. Food-focused existence: that’s me.
