How many DSA members are going to be in office come January, now?

    Mamdani, AOC, Tlaib, and…

    …?

We know that the DSA lost in Wisconsin and Floria, so actually a pretty poor track record so far. Hell, they even botched the primary against Hakeem Jeffries this year.

Here is a tracker for various candidates. We actually did pretty solid when you look at results across different levels of gov. I know it’s sad losing some more national facing races, but these state and local gov results are important for building up our base of support too. We also got a lot of new members this year, especially after each election, so between having more people to canvas and stuff and some footholds into local politics, things should hopefully only improve from here.

That looks great, and I am very happy for you! It is a huge success! But people here on Lemmy are celebrating like the majority of the democratic party are progressives, which they’re simply not. It’s important to keep sight of what is actually happening, because if people keep being told that the democratic party is practically run by progressives now, progressives are going to get all the shit when nothing changes for the better.

Yeah 100%. This is the starting line, not the finish line. We have so long to go. In particular my area didn’t have much success, which was pretty sad, but with the influx of new members this year we’ve been making plans to build up our capacity to get members to run for local offices, so hopefully that goes somewhere. Not sure if I’m going to be personally running for anything because I’m a socially awkward nervous wreck, but I’m at least gonna be supporting the people who do step up.

What also gives me a tiny bit of hope is that it seems like even the centrists have leaned somewhat into populist rhetoric in some places. I don’t expect them to follow through on any of that, but it proves the point that this is what people are looking for and if we can get enough people and organizing infrastructure to take advantage of that next time, we have a good shot at winning some more.

I’d definitely encourage people to look into DSA chapters or other orgs in their area to join up with. I’m still a bit iffy on electoralism’s efficacy, but participating in the process has been helping my mental state a lot and they don’t just do electoral politics either.

They didn’t botch the primary of Jeffries.

Instead of having a fight against Jeffries while Mamdani was fresh in office and wanting to get things done, he put off the fight until he had goodwill and capital to win the fight.

Now after less than a year the mayor has good things completed, a winter where snow was cleared, a summer where potholes were filled, roads less filled with garbage as he rolls out these new bins for residential building so sidewalks are cleared for handicapped individuals and baby strollers.

He has shown what sewer socialism can do to make people’s lives better which puts the DSA and its candidates in a better position to say this is what we do, while the other Democrats write strongly worded letters and are having meetings about affordability with Jared Kushner.

Every DSA member than can do things big and small to actually improve the lives of the public gains votes for the next DSA candidate in the next election.

    Is that actually true through?

I heard an analysis on election day, that the Democrats actually achieved the largest swings in states where they ran with centrist-conservative “purple” senate candidates that had a good platform to appeal to Republicans. That’s just second hand information though.

The figure on the right side represents democratic socialism. The artist appears to be saying that the American Democrat party won a lot this election due to the assistance of democratic socialists. The Democrat Party is probably not happy because they typically claim to be left-leaning in order to attract leftist voters, but once in power usually act in the interests of centrists and corporations.

Yup, and Corey Booker was giving all the credit to Chuck Schumer, whose handpicked candidates often lost their primaries to more leftist candidates (who went on to win).

Plus, the DNC decideded to abandon Angie Nixon, a DSAer, and she lost by only a few points.

Oh those damn centrist corporate policy stances such as:

        taxing the rich

        overturning citizens united

expanding healthcare and food access to everyone

regulating industries and fighting climate change

I looked into it. While it’s intended to represent the DSA, the symbolism used is the Fist and Rose, a symbol for leftist ideology in general. The DSA’s actual symbol is apparently a black hand and a white hand clasped together with a rose held between them, symbolizing the need for interracial cooperation against the common scapegoats used by the capitalist oligarchs of America.

There’s nothing wrong here, I just found this all interesting and wanted to share.

EDIT: As was pointed out, this symbol is on the shirt and I need to get my eyes checked.

Looking at the shirt, I do see a black and white hand shaking hands with a rose in between them- am I going nuts here or is it just a little unclear?

Still a super interesting rabbit hole. I learned that the DSA split from SI in 2017, because SI was too centrist. I would not have expected DSA to be further left than SI, but it’s nice to hear.

In France, where this symbol was designed in the 70s, the fist and rose became associated with left-leaning centrism (it’s a symbol of the Socialist Party, which rejected socialism decades ago but kept the name). It’s always strange for me seeing the DSA using it.
