That guns got Sandevistan?
How about we stop policing the pronunciation and use of specific words as a way to feel like we have control over the lack of effective communication elsewhere in our lives?
If it works to get the listener to know what you are talking about? Then what is the issue?
Oh no, what are you going to do? Send me to gaol?
My coworker used “jif” the other day, and man… Did I just like immediately lose respect for her.
I didn’t even know I cared, and I didn’t say anything… But like, wtf? Lol
Jraphics Interchange Format
The optimal format for interchanging 256-colour palletised animated images of giraffes.
It’s pronounced guiraffes.
That would be a gift.
The pronunciation of an anagram’s component words has no bearing on the anagram’s pronunciation.
Why not?
I think that question is best posed to the Joint Photographic Experts Group, better known as “jay-fegg”.
(For the record, I’m in camp “G as in Graphic”, but it’s still true that an acronym’s source words don’t dictate the pronunciation.)
Right, in cases where an acronym is pronounced as word it generally follows the normal convention of the letters that form the word. Which would STILL result in the same pronunciation as “g” in graphics or gun.
Of course accepted convention and tradition can also matter. If a word is generally pronounced a certain way then that is how its pronounced. Which of course STILL gives us the soft G.
Right, in cases where an acronym is pronounced as word it generally follows the normal convention of the letters that form the word.
Meanwhile, the GNU Project calls itself “guh-nu” and then chooses a gnu (“nu”) as its mascot.
They dont absolutely define it, but they certainly contribute. Assuming one or the other as sole definer seems silly.
Except they don’t. The vast majority of acronyms have at least one letter that’s pronounced differently than in the word it’s representing. Any correlation is purely coincidental.
So occasionally one letter doesnt fit with the rest… doesnt that mean that the rule is not absolute and my statement is correct? That often the originating phrase contributes and often it does not, and that neither is exclusive to the other?
NASA and LASER would like a word.
wait hang on… nasa works. laser is more iffy.
If you’re pronouncing NASA and Aeronautics the same way you’re definitely saying one of them wrong.
it’s a very subtle difference, if you don’t count the /æ/ diphthong. i think i could get away with it.
Congratulations on proving it’s pronounces /jiff/

Technically the original JPEG container format is “JIF”, throwing another wildcard into the mix.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_File_Interchange_Format
The base specifications for a JPEG container format are defined in Annex B of the JPEG standard, known as JPEG Interchange Format (JIF).
pronounced “jay-if”, naturally
Jay-fog is going to be my new
That said it’s still gif (not jiff).
i like how my intentionally shitty spelling of “photographic” has made my unintentional use of the word “interchange” instead of “exchange” fly under the radar.
jfig.
And autocorrect ruined my joke too, it was supposed to be Jay-feg.
MySQL would love this kind of recognition, instead it just gets turned into "My"SQL.
for those who don’t know, the y is pronounced like in “candy”. it’s named after the creator’s daughter, just like the successor project mariadb.
Mysqueel sounds good though
My Sequel has always been my preference.
Every day we stray further from Jod.
Once and for all, its pronounced “gif”, let this end all the back and forth.
Thank you for resolving this debate so resolutely
Who the hell says “Jif?” Jiff is a god damned penut butter.
I say it that way. It comes from reading a article about the brand new graphics format with a included pronunciation., You write/invent it and you get to decide. Not a whole bunch of late comers who weren’t even a gleam in their daddies eye when it was developed.

The creators of Jif call it Jif, and they’re clearly authoritative!

Until 2016, Jiff had 2 f’s.

Oh jod
Oh! My client doesn’t animate it if I tap for full image, so I didn’t realize it was a jif.
Jesse Faden would manage it just fine.
I’ve never heard of Gesse Faden.
She is the queen of the Oldest House.
He loved nothing more than jivving jifts to his wife and family at Christmas.
Actually he was not married at the time, making her his jirlfriend
I don’t animate with American brand peanutbutter.
How do you pronounce gibbet?
I assume “Jib-bay” because it is french
I assume “Jib-bay” because it is french
With my tongue
So you’re saying the ‘t’ at the end of the word ‘gift’ modifies the ‘g’ sound?
Not in _G_eneral, no.
