Where do you buy ethical clothes you can’t get in a thrift shop, and what country are you from?
I really enjoy my Darn Tough Socks, they have a lifetime warranty on every pair. No matter how long you’ve had them, they will replace them and recycle the old material for free. I don’t have any reason to dislike them yet.
They are made in Vermont in the USA and seem to have a sustainability first approach.
I’m sorry, but the correct answer IS “secondhand”.
Though mostly I get them through the mutual aid network, not from thrift store.
I was thinking of underwear and socks. It’s hard to find socks, and I don’t want to use other underwear.

Lots of stuff made in sweatshops?
In the US.
- Shirts/hoodies/etc: I like Bayside Apparel. Good price, good quality, long lasting, union made. Please buy from them so they continue to exist.
- Sneakers: New Balance has some assembled in the USA shoes. Very limited selection, but options in general are minimal. The only other Made in USA shoes I could find were like bare feet nonsense or moccasins.
- Boots: There’s a bunch of Made in USA boot makers. Redwing, Danner, and I’m sure I’m missing some good options. These will be easy to find with a Web search.
- Underwear/undershirts: I got nothin. If anyone has found anything, I’d love to know about it.
- Socks: Recently learned about Wide Open. Socks seem pretty high quality but I’ve only had them for a few months so far. I think there’s some other Made in USA sock makers as well that I’m not remembering.
I mostly look for Made in USA just because I’m happy to support my country’s workers, and the labor laws are known to me. I’ve run across some Made in EU stuff but it always seems like a hassle to get it shipped out.
Wish there was any real visibility into supply chains so we could feel more confident buying from other places. Can’t even trust companies that say they have ethical suppliers in SE Asia because they probably have no idea what their contractors are actually doing.
In Europe (portugal). I really rate them.
Ethical fabrics do not exist unless you are crazy wealthy or making them yourself
I’m from Germany, there’s an App here called Vinted which is a platform for people to sell Second Hand Clothes to each other (afaik it’s also available in many other European countries). Just the sheer amount of users usually means that you can get any item that you could get at a store. I usually use it to buy Eco-friendly brands that are too expensive for me to buy new (I found several of my favourite ArmedAngels Jeans there for like 30€ tops!)
I’ve also been dipping my toes into sewing clothes myself from thrifted fabric. Made these cool pants just last weekend!
I have an awful lot of Pact clothes that are really comfortable.
