At my school no one took shits because if you did anyone else in the bathroom would laugh and call you out by name if they could figure out who was in the stall “HAHA he’s taking a shit in there!” I was so self concious about it until senior year when I stopped caring about it

Yup and my wife is constantly complaining that my son and I won’t poop in public. It’s a childhood trauma that nobody wants to recognize and prevent. Men’s bathrooms should by code be floor to ceiling and private, especially in schools.

I don’t know what the US obsession is with giving anyone the option to crawl under or climb over a stall door.

I don’t know what the US obsession is with making us hear and smell our bathroom stall neighbors either.

Maybe it’s a lack of a ventilation system why the doors have gaps? I am from Europe where the gaps are not as excessive as in the US, still they exist and the trauma is real.

This basically North American high school PTSD

I knew very few people in my high schools … yes high schools, I went to three different schools and in every one I didn’t know many people

In my first year of school … I quickly found out … you don’t take a shit in school … EVER!

It’s basically like prison rules … if you ever get caught in the bathrooms, you’re on your own as officials, teachers and adults are seldom there and you are stuck behind closed doors with other students, most who are older than you. So all you do is pee as fast as possible and leave. You usually wait until times and moments when its quiet and no one is there … or less likely to be there.

It’s nuts because the more I write about it and remember it … the more I felt like it was more like prison rules or an institution rather than a school for children or teens.

        … and Canadian

I think the same people who designed prisons were the same people who designed modern high schools … both in the US and in Canada

Im pretty sure one of my history teachers in high school taught us this… same general ideas directing prisoners around.

I had a friend who complained about the high windows that you can’t even see out of in his high school, and he swore up and down that the building used to be a prison. I tried looking it up now to see the history, but I can’t find anything lol. Wouldn’t be surprised though if they actually were former prisons and the school just didn’t want the stigma associated with them.

My wife is a teacher, she switched schools so she could be a department head (if they work for a term as one they get paid more in retirement). Her old school was brand new, A/C in the whole school, almost all windows. Her new school is like a prison complex, no windows in her classroom at all, all the brick and concrete blocks cell signal so she disappears digitally during school hours. She does have a 70’s science classroom though, so floor to ceiling glass cabinets full of real borosilicate lab glass. I had fun there while she was moving into her classroom.

My high school was like a community college campus with most of it being built in the 50s and 60s besides one new building. Glad it was like this because I got to walk outside everyday to go to classes. Only sucked in the winter when it snowed, when it thunderstormed, and if you had a class on one side of the campus and another on the other side because we only had 3 minutes to get to class. One time it stormed so bad that the wind destroyed my umbrella.

heh… yeah I remember the boy’s bathrooms in my HS back in the late 70’s early 80’s. No doors on the stalls, and the toilet paper rolls were threaded onto chains that looped through holes in the walls that divided the stalls, with the ends locked with a padlock. There were no dividers between the urinals, and in one of the older buildings on campus, the urinals were big long communal troughs…

Yanks please answer, wtaf is going on with your gulag toilets over there?

I had to go to a fancy casino years after I first visited the US (and many visits between) before I found a public toilet that had a proper door

McDonald’s usually has good, reliable bathrooms fyi. That and truck stops (not gas stations, the ones that have big lots for truckers to sleep in overnight). There’s also an app whose name I forget like places I can poo where people rate public toilets.

those panels are more cost efficient because you can manufacture and then install them with poorer tolerances. the panels being smaller in general also means they cost less in materials to manufacture. and then, as a bonus, they allow the floor to be cleaned/mopped easier.

so, greed and laziness - the American way!

Our school’s toilet gets closed every few days because people keep pissing all over the walls, it fucking stinks through the whole corridor.

This is the reason I can’t join a normal gym, I have to pay a high fee for a premium gym membership so that I can use the washroom without gagging or finding some dude jacking off in front of the mirrors in the middle of the night.
