Dozens of academics become politicians after student group’s stunning victory

Incredible development in Serbia, where a parliament of experts sets out to reform a notoriously corrupt state.

Academics do not always make the best politicians. There is a very large difference between teaching a math or history class and leading a peoples. Plus the can be every bit a greedy and petty as the worst of us.

It’s nothing to celebrate until they prove themselves.

The Serbian Student List looks dope as hell. I love how it was created and who is in it, this really looks like what democracy was supposed to look like. Organize, discuss, debate, find compromises between normal citizens.

I’m a bit surprised with their stance towards Russia, but let’s see how it goes. They talk about food independence, but energy dependence towards a single foreign nation is seen positively.

Russia was a historical ally of Serbia for a long time, and even now strongly supports it in crucial political matters like Kosovo question.

I’m so incredibly proud of the people of Serbia for not giving up on this for years. They got it done. I hope Serbia has a brighter future now.

Honestly, this whole road was very hard and so surprising even for us from Serbia, I still can’t believe it. No external support, plenty of support for the ruling regime. Years of protests. Corruption at all levels. I can hardly believe. Already lots of arrests and country-fleeing rats. We’ve already had revolutions, but this one is the first one that feels like it’s peoples’. Hope it turns out good. But Serbia is small and susceptible to a lot of external pressures. Gonna be really hard.

Gave me flashbacks to the optimism of the protests in Lebanon in 2019 before all the momentum died and the co-opting by old political factions. I hope we learn from your struggle. Good luck.

I see the same spirit throughout Europe, I hope for similar outcomes - Albania, France, Italy, Hungary. Past regime has been breeding xenophobia, as it suits authoritarian regimes, I hope to see more celebration of similarities between people rather than pointing out differences.

IMO, whenever things get tough, people first reach for the extreme - right or left, then only after that fails (and it can fail spectacularly), they look for smart-looking folks. Serbia has only been a bit quick to fail with extreme - in this case - the extreme populist. This is just my oversimplified opinion, the truth is far more complex - but Serbia has clearly had enough.

I can’t get too excited before we see the outcome. I’ve spent enough time in academia to know they’re every bit as susceptible to eccentric ideas, with the added hazard that they can make them sound like they’re being very clever.

If I can try and get any prediction based on how it usually plays out is that it goes gradually, almost unnoticeably, from well-meaning to exploiting individuals, almost seamlessly but, often, those are not the same people. Good people tend to get pushed aside too often, by opportunistic people. That’s human nature, unfortunately, and we must always be on the lookout. Support quality people and monitor - or deal with consequences.

Power corrupts nearly everyone, in time. That’s why we need to keep up the churn, don’t allow individuals to become entrenched, and make every office with significant power electable, rather than appointable.

        Term limits for all.

Wait though… to be successful in academia, you have to be pretty good at politics. Some say that is more important than actual knowledge… so what KIND of academics did they elect. Hoping for the good kind.

can we please not forget that the reason the CCP revolution was so successful was thanks to its peasant origins and grassroots appeal amid a series of revolutions the US could not stop no matter how many munitions they maneuvered over thanks to how popular they were? rebranding revolutionaries as some kind of high-IQ population does nothing save defy historicity, stray from Marx’s message (or was this particular one Lenin’s?) that nothing is “fated” and everything thought to be natural can be surpassed through material efforts—i.e. that any circumstance can be risen above through hard work, that no matter what class you were born into, you may organize and revolt—and reeks of elitism.

I don’t think colloquial usage of the word election for a country means party elections. Were there national elections that selected leaders during the Communist Revolution?
