Do Violent Femmes count as folk punk? Or even punk?
I mean I guess so sound wise. But they aren’t even like post punk. They’re altrock. Would be like Sublime folk punk because they use an acoustic guitar (and are far more punk than Violent Femmes).
I would argue folk punk didn’t slget going till we were fully in the post punk era (2001 and on). Mid 90s and punk was in full swing.
At first it wasn’t immediate that they’d be any sort of folk or punk because of of those 2 songs that got rotation on commercial alternative stations. But I’d argue they are after listening to that Country Death Song, and at least a banjo is featured in a number of their b sides. In the end we are all arguing semantics I suppose.

I saw them live at the zoo once, so good, highly recommend
They played on the first big festival I ever visited. Heavy rain, just before they entered the stage but they managed to keep us warm and moving :D
