I just started watching some anime and was thinking about this!

I watched a few different series in English, dubbed, and they seemed good… then I tried another “classic” dubbed in English (Attack on Titan) and I didn’t like it. I had a gut feeling that it would be better w/ Japanese and subtitles, so I decided to try it, and it was almost a different show… much better. Not only did the voices make more sense, the words are very different, almost completely different on some occasions.

I’m scared to rewatch the shows in Japanese that I already watched in English, haha.

I totally understand about not wanting to read subtitles, I don’t necessarily want to, either, but it can completely change the show and be the difference between it being good and not good… not to mention the creators’ original intentions…

Most people when talking/thinking about “motivation” are referring to extrinsic motivation.

Even if they make a distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic, they basically assume these add together to create “more” motivation.

However, they don’t sum together. One crowds out the other, like in a neverending battle.

Health insurance is a scam, yes, it’s part of the bigger scam called capitalism, which is the privatization of profits and socialization of losses. A private “savings account” is not escaping the scam, it is at best side-stepping it, into a different method, even less efficient, where everyone in society just does (and pays for) every little thing on their own. Why don’t we all just pay individually for each unit of oxygen we breathe?

Something better would be simply that we find a way to efficiently pay for everyone, as much as possible, to have healthcare (among a number of other things). Until something better can exist, this is “public insurance.”

So you spent 10 years studying philosophy and responded to my comment, “Critical thinking and empathy are important, and a lot of people don’t have much / aren’t very good at it” (hmm a LOT of philosophers would agree with this and say this is a reason more people should study philosophy) with: “how do you measure it?” and “how do you force people to do it?” – when I never said it could necessarily be measured or that it could/should be “forced.” I also never said people need a liberal arts degree, which you also misunderstood.
