I mostly cut out the live news cycle from my life. There’s really no benefit in keeping up with the immediacy of the live news cycle.

I still have the guardian news app just for the breaking news alerts in case of something major. The only reason I use this is that they tend to send the least number of bullshit notifications (e.g. no shit about British royal family drama).

I’m finding the news experience is much better when I catch a summary of the news story a few days later when the situation is better understood and developed. I get almost all my news from the TLDR news YouTube channel.

If you are going to use a news site, then I would suggest using it through an RSS reader app. That way the news comes through chronologically. If you do this, you get away from the bullshit prioritisation of stories on news websites.

Lemmy doesn’t have that much content. It is easy to get through relevant content of interest pretty quickly. Then there’s not much point in going back till the next day. I haven’t felt the need to uninstall the app.

The side effects of an amazing technology…but the technology is still amazing. I wouldn’t interpret it as overrated at all.

When something comes along that can be misused so easily, then it takes a conscious effort to avoid misuse. It’s the same with cars, processed foods, or any modern innovation really. Be the change you want to see. Reject social media. Turn off pretty much every phone notification. Have screen free time. Socialise without screens. I’m trying to do all these things. It’s difficult when no one else is interested in following suit and I just get excluded when I’m not on the platforms everyone else uses…but I’m trying to gather a circle of people who are aligned in this way of living.

I’ve heard good things. Would it be easy for friends to pick up quickly?

A lot of changes is society have come up in the last couple of generations. Changes equality, sexual freedoms, modern parenting, men’s roles at home, women’s role at work, etc. Many of my parent’s generation really do not know the first things about changing roles and expectations of the sexes and what people of the current generation want. Most people I know of that generation are (mildly to extremely) socially conservative. I get along great with my parents and I happily welcome them to live with me for 5 months of every year… But I would never have the teach anyone in my generation the lessons from their generation (I do speak to them about these things out of interest, but more to talk about how different the culture is between or generations now).

Most parents/adults don’t know how to treat the opposite sex either though.

People propagate this though. Company twitter accounts posting derivative meme shit is what people reshare. Most people consider Apple/Tesla/Pelaton/Nintendo to be their buddies and love it when their buddy seems like a down to earth, regular guy. It’s cringe.

By the time I actually buy a song, I’ve been listening to it repeatedly at least 10 to 20 times. At that point I’m buying it to put in my offline library and the cost is worth it immediately. The £1 per song price hasn’t changed in a very long time. My music taste is very narrow, so I rarely find songs I like anyway. My entire music library amassed over my lifetime is 780 tracks currently (after removing some I lost interest in previously). So I definitely get my money’s with out of my music.

Lemmy is another form of social media, and bullshit that happens on social media will come here as more people come here. Your life will be much better if you make full use of blocklists and filtering.

Is it not well known by now that settlers and scammers do this on Amazon? They build up positive reviews with a different product and then change the product listing so it looks like the new item has loads of good reviews. This listing probably was for a dashcam when that user bought it.

I used the right analogy stick back in the day for acceleration and braking. That worked well too.
