One of the ugliest cars in an era of ugly cars. AMC, undeterred, followed it up with the Pacer. It easily outuglied the Gremlin.

32·4 days agoA handheld calculator and a slide rule. If the power goes out for a long time, I’ll still be doing math while the rest of you chumps will be using your fingers to count to 10.
DId you try CRTL-Z?
Yes, learned how with a program on a VAX computer ('80s) using a VT100 terminal. I managed to get through high school and college by hunt and peck, though. Definitely not recommended.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Would you want to go back in time when you were a kid?English
3·17 days agoUp until a few years ago, I would have said “no”. Growing up during the Cold War meant always wondering when the nukes would come. Every day at noon the sirens would wail, reminding you of what you’d hear as you rushed to the closest fallout shelter. Car radios had special markers for the Civil Defense stations you would tune to when it happened. It was a lot for a kid to have to deal with.
But the nukes never came. The sirens stopped wailing at noon. The shelters, and the signs that advertised them, are long gone. The supplies they were stocked with expired and were thrown away. The great enemy collapsed under the weight of its own incompetence.
It was an unsettling time, but we didn’t have to worry about being apprehended walking home from school, or having someone from the government break down our front door with guns drawn. The government, to some degree, seemed to have our safety in mind (even if some of those measures would have been ineffective). It wasn’t a golden era, but it was better than what we’re in now.
So, my answer is “yes, yes I would.”

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are firefighters doing when there's no fire?English
16·26 days agoFires are only a small percentage of the calls most departments respond to. The majority is EMS, with various calls for some type of service making up the rest. As such, firefighters spend a lot of time in training for the various kinds of situations they’re called to. There’s also maintenance of equipment and gear, certifications, and in some cases, inspection of buildings for compliance. In my area, local departments have been funded to hand out smoke and CO detectors to homes that don’t have them, as well as change batteries.
Add to that eating, sleeping, and exercise. Firefighters go from 0 to 100% when the alarm sounds, and that can be taxing on the heart, so cardiovascular fitness is essential.

I teach at a local university and it provides some free parking in addition to paid parking. Of course, the paid spaces are closer to the buildings, but at least there’s some free spaces, too.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When/how frequently do you replace your phone with a new one?English
5·2 months agoI started with an iPhone 5. I replaced it after the second battery started dying with an iPhone 8. Replaced that with an iPhone 16 when the second battery started dying. I always have them in an OtterBox Defender case and take good care of them, so batteries become the deciding factor.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does anyone else hate how everyone is trying to make money all the time?English
51·2 months agoThe job market sucks and it’s only getting worse. A full-time job doesn’t provide the same standard of living it did for previous generations. I don’t like how there’s so much pressure to have a side hustle that makes money versus just having a hobby you enjoy, but for some people that’s their only option. But I don’t hate them, I hate the system.
That being said, it wasn’t cool for him to include you in his video. You have every right to push back and avoid this in the future.
