  • No one deserves to be insulted for their nationality.

I wasn’t in that thread, but that’s not an appropriate way for folks to treat eachother

Also, Americans are grieving what may be legitimately the end of vital freedoms, the end of safety for many minority populations, which many of my loved ones belong to, potentially the end of free elections, and an independent court.

It also may mean the complete derailment of any global climate policies as the US steps back from climate commitments, which may prompt other super powers to do the same. That is not a good thing.

Some space to grieve would be welcome. If you live in Russia you have my love and my condolences, I’m sure you have been living with anxieties about your interests not being represented for a long time.

The opposite, they filter blue wavelengths, (and some green), preventing light exposure from telling my brain it’s time to be awake :)

I have delayed sleep phase disorder, which makes sleep happen much later for me than is typical, so things that can make it easier to fall asleep a bit sooner can be helpful

If you’re interested in the science, about 2 hours before we’d naturally feel drowsy and wanna go to sleep the body hits what’s called your DLMO, or ‘dim light melatonin onset’, which is the point in your circadian rhythm when your alertness starts to drop off for the day as your body starts to secrete melatonin that accumulates in your system until you feel sleepy. But as the name suggests, this only happens when that biological process isn’t delayed by light exposure, and it’s most sensitive to blue wavelengths (technically it’s a bell-curve sort of distribution where the green side of blue is most activating, and it’s less activating the more you stray to either side of that wavelength). If I understand correctly light exposure similarly triggers your body to pull melatonin out of your system, essentially waking you up if you just got up for the day, or are feeling sleepy at bedtime.

Light intensity also matters, which these glasses do less to help with, but they really cut down on the wavelengths that are most disruptive to feeling sleepy. Because my sleep is SO late, the easiest way for me to vote is to go right before my bedtime when the sun is up, which can be hugely destabilizing to my already pretty crap sleep schedule 😅

So the glasses here made it slightly easier to go home from voting and being out in the sunlight, and try to start winding down for sleep I’m hoping to also get some of those silly looking fitover sunglasses to help minimize light intensity, and then I’ll have the option to take them off when I go inside running daylight errands before sleep, as that’s when I have access to places during open hours

  • Yep! Same principle. if you’re wearing them to advance your sleep timing or have an easier time getting to sleep early enough, most of the research is on using them for the 2-3 hours before sleep to prevent light exposure from delaying the natural secretion of melatonin.

Though it’s worth noting there are interventions for insomnia that make way more sense to do first, like good sleep hygiene, and melatonin I believe 3 hours before intended sleep time, with an ideal dose of around half a miligram (I say “I believe” because I learned a bit ago the research now actually indicates even earlier for my sleep disorder and I’m not sure whether things have changed for insomnia as well) Most people take waaaaay too much melatonin.

But like if you like the glasses they certainly don’t hurt 🤷‍♂️

Because my sleep schedule is so late I get sunlight at bedtime and darkness in the mornings, which… Isn’t great 😅 That also means if I need to go do things during business hours like vote I’m out in the sun and then have to go to sleep when I get home

The glasses help a bit, but at a certain point the sheer light intensity of the sun will still significantly delay your circadian rhythm, regardless of whether you’re blocking the most activating parts of the light spectrum (blue-green, mostly blue) so I’m thinking I might try getting a cheap pair of those super geriatric fitover sunglasses I can pair with the orange ones lol
