Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Would the movie Donnie Darko be better without Jake Gyllenhaal?
29·18 days agoI don’t think so. I can’t think of another actor in that time that would have been a better fit for the role.
If he was shoving triangles down their throats then I’d be more on your side, but I see it as a person who got help and wants to share that help with other.
Yeah, I get that, but the guy just seems to be happy to share what he’s learned, and it’s kinda shitting on the fact that he’s trying to be helpful because he found help.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your strategy to ensure date night goes well?
18·1 month agoSet up a pizza delivery the day before to ensure it shows up at the exact time I want it. Figure out a good movie ahead of time. Order a fresh bottle of lotion off amazon. Do some stretches with my wrists the day of. Light some candles. You know, the basics.
I’m not sure what this is trying to convey.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your internet White-Whale?
5·1 month agoThere was an animated video, hand drawn, animated on the 1s and smooth as fuck. It was two orbs colliding and battling like they were atoms, and then at the end of the video it was a nuclear explosion. Or something like that. This would have been from like 20+ years ago back on Newgrounds or something, but I’ll be damned if I can find it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where'd all the straight-edge people go?
8·2 months agoI work with three of them. Two fell off the wagon, and the third is one of the nicest people I know.
Hell yeah :) Great shot.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is it called when you believe the U.S. political parties shouldn’t exist?
3·2 months agoA nation of toddlers all screaming for something different and being unable to come together on a single point.
Edit for the downvoters: Without parties, you’d likely face some serious problems.
Coalition-building becomes nearly impossible. Right now, parties help aggregate different interests and forge compromises between, say, fiscal conservatives and social conservatives, or between labor unions and environmentalists. Without that pre-existing framework, every single issue would require building coalitions from scratch among hundreds of individual legislators.
Voters would be overwhelmed. Instead of choosing between a few party platforms, they’d need to research dozens or hundreds of individual candidates’ positions on every issue. Most people simply don’t have the time or expertise to make informed choices at that level of granularity.
Legislative chaos. You’d essentially have a legislature full of independents trying to form temporary alliances on every vote. Look at how difficult it becomes when even a small number of members break from party discipline, and now imagine that as the permanent state of affairs.
Accountability becomes murky. Parties provide a way for voters to hold someone responsible for governance. Without them, when things go wrong, who exactly do you vote against?
The irony is that even in a “no-party” system, informal factions and coalitions would likely emerge anyway, but they’d just be less transparent and accountable to voters than formal parties are.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was your last “impulse buy” and was it worth it?
5·2 months agoThis is the only bag I’ve bought. The first one came with my old camera, a basic Nikon bag. It was never meant for the gear I have, I’ve just been making it work.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was your last “impulse buy” and was it worth it?
31·2 months agoI guess it was a new camera bag. I didn’t need it, but I wanted it. Turns out, having a bag with a long enough strap to go cross body makes it a lot easier to lug around my camera, a handful of lenses, and my tripod for a few hours while I walk around. Totally worth it.

16·2 months agoFilling empty beer bottles with hand sanitizer. Pass them out at marches so people don’t get sick.
Who is letting their 3 year old eat “a couple slices of pizza”?
Edit: Below is a DiGiorno cheese pizza. This is for 1/4 of the pizza, which is two slices if it is cut into 8. This particular pizza is a 12" pie and equates to about a Medium from a typical restaurant. It is roughly half of a daily recommended intake of nutrients and calories for a three year old, and nearly 100% of their daily sodium recommendations, all in two fairly small slices. By all means, let your kids eat all the pizza they want… I’m sure the childhood obesity problem will sort itself out.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you do when homeless folks ask for money?
7·3 months agoI don’t carry cash on me. I’m mostly not lying. It’s rare that I have any. I use my phone for 99% of my daily purchases.

30·4 months agoThere is a whole extra spoke in the wheel. Look, I’m not gonna reinvent it… I just… need to… adjust some values… and there! Look, its fine.
Wait.
Why is it wobbling like that?
Hold on, I just need to get rid of this other spoke…

2·4 months agoYou can kinda see this play out in the short story by Ted Chiang called The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate.

I hope the hill I die on is boobie shaped.
