I don’t think he does any podcasts anymore. He stepped away from Cortex about 6 months ago, and Hello Internet has been gone for years now. Agreed with maintaining upload quality and sacrificing frequency, which had been the status quo for years, but i’m afraid the channel is more abandoned now.

Well this is why i wish he would put out more videos, to see his reflection of this almost 10 years later knowing what we know now that self driving cars are here, and not stuff that was in highly controlled environments. To me, Grey always seemed like someone who trusts computers more than people, so maybe he’d still hold the same stance, but i would be interested in hearing his thoughts rather than dismissing him because of something he said 10 years ago which hasn’t come true. I also vaguely remember hearing in one of his podcasts that he had gotten into a really bad car accident and actually didn’t drive for many years after that, so I’d imagine some of his admiration with self driving cars at the time was focused on them reporting being safer than human drivers. Who knows, but I for sure would like to see a 2026 version of the end of that video about solving traffic from him.

I’m not sure of the specifics you’re referring to, but seemed with most of his content, he was pretty clear with the data that formed his opinions, and was pretty honest when he was either wrong or changed his mind on something, which I respect.

Not sure if this counts, but CGP Grey. The frequency of the videos was always a joke, but the most recent video is a 3 month old paywalled vid of an early preview for a video still unreleased publicly. I still enjoy the videos when they’re released, so it’s not the quality, but the channel is clearly on autopilot. I hope everything’s ok with him and maybe he’s just using YouTube as passive income now that he hit it big?

The one that got me was trying to make a grill scrubber made entirely in the US, failing to source all the parts domestically, being somewhat xenophobic in the process, and then having the audacity of selling the thing for $80 (or more) when the exact product exists already for half the price. At some point the whole point of the video changed from “rebuilding manufacturing in America” to “China bad”. I assume the attempt was in defense of the Trump tariffs, but the takeaway is the US is not in a position to manufacture things on a small scale, and throwing tariffs on it won’t change and people will just have to pay more to import items since they can’t be made locally.

From what I heard, they screen tested both versions of the movie, the directors version and the one edited by the trailer company, and both tested equally the same. Rather than defer to the director, they chose to take the scenes which tested the best in each version of the edit, and combine those together into the mess we saw.

Before Youtube allowed long video uploads and before video Podcasts were a thing, I remember some early tech creators were creating long form videos around 2004-2005 and they would distribute episodes via BitTorrent, since it was most cost effective for them.

Right, I’m aware of tax companies doing this. I’m not sure if PII deletion services are doing the same, but they do benefit by having weak data protection laws. What I meant is it wouldn’t surprise me if data deletion companies are also lobbying against what’s best for Americans, the same way tax prep companies do.

How do you think Alice and Bob met?

I would assume they do something, but I have not used any of these services myself. My feeling is they’re kinda like the tax filing software, they might be useful tools, but their whole business relies on things being unnecessarily burdensome for the average person. I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out that these companies lobby for lax regulations for data brokers, just enough for their product to be useful but not enough to put them out of business.

Overall, I feel if I freeze my credit, and occasionally google my name for data broker websites, going through the opt-out on the ones, I think that’s enough to put me above 90% of the US population, and then it’s just a numbers game of not getting scammed.

Whenever I’m sick I will always just put on The Venture Bros. while I recover. The show spanned so many years, makes me feel better watching the show evolve and remembering what point in my life I was in when various episodes aired.
