Ah, “buy” was a typo but it wasn’t meant to be “boy”. I know better than that. It was meant to be “guy”.

Yeah, I’ve worked retail too and I don’t think I would have done this, even if I did have another task to complete.
This cashier’s lane light was on. They smiled at me, came to help, scanned my items, and let me pay. Then, rather than scanning the man’s six items, they put up their closed sign and walked away without saying a word while leaving their lane light on. It felt hostile and rude.
Thank you, I appreciate it. It’s honestly weighing on me that I didn’t say something. I guess the best that I can do is to do better next time something similar happens.
Thank you. You don’t think that speaking up would be more embarrassing for the man that what already happened? I feel terrible that I didn’t act more appropriately in the moment, but I was too shocked to think of a good response to the situation.
I like this. This is the mentality I plan to take with me in case of future situations. I feel terrible that I wasn’t present enough to act appropriately in the moment.
She’s a bad ass for just having the guts to go out there like that. Good for her! I’d be mortified to try that…
How does the archive.org exemption work? When is it voted on next?
Unless you are salaried. Being salaried normally comes with flexibility but gives no guarantees for breaks and number of hours worked.
The name comes from the name of the person who first proposed the Julian Calendar, Julius Caesar.
I’ve come to the conclusion that conservatives are just people whose sense of empathy is broken. Over and over I hear about conservatives who held bigoted beliefs and only changed their minds when confronted by someone they love becoming the target of other people’s identical bigoted beliefs. These people just can’t empathize enough to think “what if it was my child/spouse/friend?”
What do you mean by a “dismissive parenting style”?
Some of those people would have formed a militia to hunt down anyone who they suspected of being infected. It would have been a long, drawn out, paranoid massacre.
Thank you, this was really interesting. I was trying to look up more information on “stabilimorphs” but google pulls up nothing on the term. I’m wondering what causes them to continue mutating in such a stable way. Are they simply that well adapted that they’ve fallen into a stable configuration that has no instability in any of the many dimensions available or is there something else that is maintaining their physical configuration while mutations continue to occur?
Wow, $2 for a pack of cigarettes. I’m glad it’s not that cheap here. It would have made it harder for me to quit!
the nose is maybe strangely small, lips are a little off-putting
Well, I mean… It’s not THAT far off, is it?
Viruses have smuggled enough DNA into our DNA that 8% of the human genome is thought to derive from these events. Maybe that’s not the primary source of evolution, but it is a source of evolution.
Does anyone know of a good /r/askscience-like community on Lemmy? I’ve got lots of questions about horseshoe crabs.
I’ve never read much about horseshoe crabs before. I knew they were interesting, but they’re fascinating! Here’s a good summary of some of what we know about them: https://www.earthdate.org/episodes/horseshoe-crabs-living-fossils
Interestingly, because their environment is replete with bacteria and their circulatory system makes them particularly prone to infection, they have developed a zero-tolerance immune system. It kills anything it finds that is abnormal.
I wonder how much impact their immune system has on their stagnant evolution. Does killing all intruders reduce the likelihood of mutations by disallowing viruses and the mutations that they bring? Does their immune system know what their DNA should look like and immediately kill any mutations that it finds?
I’m curious about a bunch of things here.
I found a source that supports your “almost half” number for microplastics contribution from synthetic clothing.
The source is a little lacking in that they don’t have real numbers for synthetic textile contribution to microplastics, just the overall contribution of textiles to micropolution, but they do talk about the relationships between the two.
Like, you hire a contractor to do work for you and ask them to let you apprentice for them at the same time and they go for it? I would love doing this so I don’t have to hire a contractor the second time! What do you say to them to get them to agree?
