I know you’re not making those arguments, you’re just relaying what you’ve seen elsewhere, but I sure do hate to see them being made because they’re always in bad faith. On the one hand, they claim to want ‘historical accuracy’ as if the movie was trying to be a documentary or something, while simultaneously ignoring the historical fact that different peoples have been moving around and intermingling with other peoples since the dawn of civilization. They want to have their (racist) cake and eat it too all under the disguise of “just trying to be accurate”. Also, let’s be real here, as much as celebrity culture can be (and is) a problem in some cases, they are all professional actors, this is their job and most of them are pretty good at it. And if Nolan was forced to cast only native Greek people, not only would that create its own discrimination, but far fewer people would see the movie because there simply aren’t as many familiar faces. Sadly not everyone agrees with you on that one (though I’m mostly on your side here). I’ve seen plenty of people argue ‘Oh the refs should’ve seen that’ despite being all the way across the field or ‘Oh the judges really should know what the cards do’ in a TCG with literally tens of thousands of cards in print, or ‘the ump should have called that a strike, look it’s catching the corner’ as if they don’t realize that the graphics they see on TV are not actually visible above the plate, or other similarly-ludicrous takes. Honestly it’s a little scary how infallible the ‘deciders’ are meant to be in these situations and I believe that giving them as many tools as they can reasonably use is an overall positive thing (as long as the humans are still the ones making the final decision, I feel like I should point that out). Though yeah, I agree that that one particular offsides call you’re referring to was egregious and the humans in charge should’ve stepped in and ruled it fair; like I said at the beginning, they’re not perfect yet (and probably never will be, but that’s a whole other matter)

Like I said in the beginning, they’re not perfect and there have indeed been some bad calls. But that can be said for the human refs too and taking away one of their most valuable tools is only going to cause more mistakes/bad calls. The specific call you’re talking about? Yeah, that’s a bit extreme, they were clearly following the letter of the law rather than the spirit, but that’s hardly a problem limited to football, or even professional sports in general. At the end of the day, everyone involved here is human and humans are prone to making mistakes, even WITH dozens of multi-thousand-dollar cameras watching from every angle, I’m just simply arguing that we shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water

But I still don’t think you should throw out the baby with the bath water when they can provide a great benefit for the actual refs on the field who simply can’t be everywhere at once. I greatly appreciate you providing some links/examples though where most people (not necessarily in this thread but across the internet) simply rely on the age-old “just trust me bro”. At the end of the day, I still think more cameras are an overall benefit, it’s just a matter of working out how to better integrate them, and by providing examples of how they’re misused we can better figure that out, so thank you 👍

Like I said, I don’t think they’re being used perfectly, no. And I think you’re right that they can indeed be used in a negative/unfair way. But I do still believe that having the multi-cam option is a good thing for a professional sporting event. I don’t know the exact rules on how they’re used in FIFA (so feel free to call me out here), but if I had to guess, I think it’s similar to the use of the review box in American Football: the refs on the field make a call, if it’s disputed or if they need more info then they go to the cameras, but ultimately the human beings on the field have the final say. Obviously I didn’t watch every World Cup match, but I don’t recall ever seeing a moment where the VAR stopped play and made a call on its own that every ref on the field had missed. Sports commentators might have seen/talked about something like that, saying that the refs SHOULD have picked up on something, but at the end of the day it’s still humans making the initial calls and the cameras are just there to provide evidence.

Not claiming VAR is perfect or that FIFA isn’t full of shit weasels, but isn’t having more cameras (in professional sports games) just objectively better? The refs on the field are still extremely important, but they can’t be omnipotent, so if necessary then why deny them access to dozens of different angles to confirm what really happened at any given time?

Oh my bad, I wasn’t aware you knew everything about the entire world. You do know that revising history is a legitimate, academic practice and should be done when new information becomes available, right? If we only ever took the first accounting of an event and never went back to scrutinize it, then we would still all believe the US Civil War was fought by the South just wanting to defend themselves from the greedy North, or that that the USSR were the sole instigators/escalators of the Cold War, or that Napoleon was abnormally short. None of these statements are true, and it was only by going back and correcting our previous assumptions that we came to those conclusions.

Oh also, yeah there are a lot of similarities between cults and religions (and militaries for that matter, but let’s not make this even more messy) and I’m not really trying to defend either of them, but at least when I was being dragged to church as a kid, I wasn’t also forced to never speak to a non-believer again, or only eat bread and water for a week because I couldn’t list the 10 Commandments upon request, or something like that. Every Sunday morning sucked but you know what happened Sunday afternoon? I got to go home and live a normal life again without someone constantly checking on me to make sure I wasn’t breaking the rules in need of correction. You don’t get that freedom in most cults, especially not Scientology; I got to leave my situation without having to live in fear for the rest of my life, most of them don’t get that luxury
