I’ve been on the platform for like a month and already told to go back to Reddit 3 times.
It’s not gay if only our dick and butthole touch

If they don’t contribute to good conversation.
“Stupid questions” i.e. questions that reveal you are missing some basic common knowledge, are actually generally downvoted on No Stupid Questions. Along with any that intentionally agitate people or are otherwise bad faith, bury the lead or otherwise strawman The Correct Side in an unpleasant way.
There needs to be something at least marginally interesting about the conversation the question generates. If it’s just annoying/tedious/aggravating, people will downvote.

Almost all databases store time in Unix time stamps, which is just a number counting up. Then the various consumers of that value, such as clocks, convert it based on their need (such as time savings, geographic region, etc). But someone in florida has the same unix timestamp at a given instant as someone in Africa.

I have some scary statistics to show you about the typical geographic region of Lemmy users.
Especially once filtered for English

TLDR shit is cold up there

This is what I’m hearing as well. From slightly (but not extremely) informed sources.

Discussing polling data does not imply people shouldn’t vote nutter

Ok and zero % chance he escalates wars to a point that there is backlash in a way that affects US citizens? cyber wars, etc?

Zero is silly.
Ultra-ultra low, I can respect. But you think there is zero chance trump will refuse the results of the election? That’s not reality.

I got banned for one of those “How to kill orphan after parent is dead” jokes in a programming sub.
Which… the whole joke is that without context it looks awful. But also. Did the bot think I was sincerely asking…? I killed the parents but I needed Reddit’s help on the next steps.
“Overeducated” is quite the pejorative.
Especially in the context of critiquing grammar.

Pretty much anything about science.
We all know models and simplifications but even the people at the utter cutting edge of any sub-niche of any sub-field you pick will agree there are parts they don’t really understand.
You can master & fully understand sufficiently simplified models but to actually understand the underlying process is to take a step beyond what humanity is capable of.

I generally find it unhelpful. People’s reaction time sucks and and so many people hear ‘left’ and jump in that direction before their brain can process. It’s not an intelligence thing that some people try to make it seem, it’s just that the average person has this interaction like once per year thus don’t have muscle memory baked in.
I yell out ‘excuse me’ from several feet back or ring a bell if I’m on a bike. Or more often just slow down as I normally don’t really care.

Websites are basically just a program on a different computer somewhere. Think of it like passing notes back and forth.
User sends a note using their computer requesting the website content, that note gets passed to someone elses computer. That computer looks at the note and sends back a different note with some different information on it i.e. the website content. Then they keep sending notes back and forth as the user takes actions. The main two categories of “taking over a website” is to either catch the notes while they are being passed and change what it says (MITM attack) or to convince the other computer to send different notes to begin with.
But of course, the owners of the website have layers and layers and layers of protection to make it really hard to ‘convince’ their computer to do something unless you have all their special keys/passwords. That’s why you need to find some defect that lets you in anyways, or somehow get their keys/passwords.

Has yahoo become so desperate and/or scammy that they rely on malicious extensions to drive traffic to their shitty search engine
Yes basically. Ask.com went the same way.
Create an incentive program and then let the less ethical side of the internet build adware.

There are many news commentators I generally enjoy but EVERY SINGLE VIDEO has a headline about some person getting destroyed or how “it’s over” for them.
I just want like, 20-30 minutes coverage of whatever happens to be the most interesting & important stuff without a whole bunch of bullshit fluff. I’ve stopped watching news on YT in general because of this and just stick to the content that knows it’s slop i.e. video game challenge runs lmao.

View count is a tipoff. For whatever reason I get a lot of ultra-low view count videos in my feed, like single or double digit view counts. It’s almost always AI slop
