Read “Nudge” by Richard Thaler. Choice architecture is a real thing that has impact on whether things we want to happen actually happen. It’s not because people aren’t smart enough.

Protests aren’t the only thing that activists in the US are doing. It’s not an either or situation.

Linux@lemmy.world•Why do servers and supercomputers primarily run on Linux and not on some Microsoft/Apple/Google/Amazon OS?English
7·3 months agoI can relate to being intimidated by any instructions that mention the terminal. When I first started with Linux I would prefer doing stuff using a GUI over command line.
I started getting into hobbyist coding stuff, and fifteen years later I’m much more comfortable with the terminal.
Even so, I think trying to make Linux more palatable for the average person is going to be tough. It’s very difficult to make something that’s powerful and extensible while also being easy to use.
No, this is looking at it wrong. You get to fuck the sexy hybrid human-dog abomination

Autism@lemmy.world•Do you ever feel like a lot of conflict and controversy could be avoided if everyone was more clear about what they mean?
6·5 months agoFor me I think it helps to think of error correction. When two computers are exchanging information it’s not just one way, like one machine just sends a continuous stream to the other and then you’re done. The information is broken up into pieces, and the receiving machine might say “I didn’t receive these packets can you resend.” And there are also things like checking a hash to make sure the copied file matches the original file.
How much more error correction do you think we should have in human conversation, when your idea of the “file transfer protocol” is different than the other participant? “I think you’re saying X, is that correct?” Even if you think you completely understand, a lot of times the answer is “no, actually… blah blah.”
You brought up the idea of neurodivergents providing more detail, which can be helpful. But even there, one person may have a different idea about which details are relevant, or what the intended goal of the conversation is.
Taking a step beyond that, I recognize that I am not a computer, and I’m prone to making errors. I may think I’m perfectly conveying all the necessary information, but experience has shown that’s not always true. Whether or not the problem is on my end or the other person’s, if I’m trying to accomplish a given objective, it’s in my personal interest to take extra steps to ensure there’s no misunderstanding.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•You have the option to absolve all of Chair or all of Table for the rest of eternity from the fabric of reality. Which would be easier to live without?
5·5 months agoI think chairs and tables are insufficiently different - people would end up using one as a substitute for the other. I think a more interesting question would be what if you were required to magically eliminate all perfectly level planes (tables, chairs, beds), or eliminate all slanted planes (ramps, screws, lazy boys)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Not to get all religous but was not Jesus pissed for people making money in churches? Didn't he flip tables and everything? Then how do churches nowadays explain the collection plate?
12·5 months agoI’m an atheist, but if you read about Jesus specifically you won’t find a lot of hate.

Are there any causes you’re interested in? Volunteering is a good way to meet people. Having some kind of structured activity besides “making friends” and defined start/end times can be helpful to take pressure off.
