For example, I imagine East Sussex and Alsace-Lorraine wouldn’t have a great degree of things to share between disparate instances like that.

How is it federation but not Activitypub specifically? I thought that was the only protocol that currently allows for federation. Are there others? Or other ways?

One element of Lemmy that is being underutilised by many people is the ‘together but separate’ nature of this social media.

This is probably due to a lot of the user interfaces, be it desktop or mobile, not prioritising showing a distinction between servers.

The app ‘sync’ is one example that does prioritise this, (although its not been updated for ages so is slowly breaking).

This app allows you to visit each server individually, not just single communities. This means you can spend your time on some of the country specific, or special interest servers where the very ‘reddity’ US politics posting is minimal, if present at all.

So my advice, go explore some specific servers. I don’t know what DB0’s server is like. Just had a quick look, seems like a tonne of bots posting on the local, so maybe not the best example of what I mean.

Try my home instance (aussie.zone) theres a group of regular posters, and while we have an ‘overseas news’ community, it isnt the most popular community on the server, and US stuff is far from the top three of subjects.

Other examples of what I mean are,

We have the ability to have whole servers dedicated to niche topics, and their different facets, while still being connected to the whole, its quite fantastic.

So go explore different servers, maybe even move to a server that particularly interests you, that way when you can’t do the content on ‘all’ or ‘subscribed’ communities, theres the ‘local’ or ‘favourite’ servers there as well.

Good thing about activitypub is the power of mods and admins is always checked by the ability of others to enter the scene and create competitor communities and servers.

In Western Australia we’ve been rolling out FOGO bins (Food and Garden organics waste), last summer i didn’t tie off one of the bags properly and there were maggots everywhere, spilling out of the bin.

I guess this could happen with general waste bins as well, so i suppose i’ve changed my attitude on the wrapping up waste to go in your bin idea. The only way i see around it is more home composting.

Yeah, thats the way it ought to be, its actually slightly different, and is very important in the context of what a country does to undermine it’s own currency, or even a companies director does to the value of their company.

Value is a question of perception. How much are people/investors willing to tolerate and still perceive the value in a good or service or currency.

Its the reason the massive quantitative easing ended up spreading so widely as a tool in the last 15 years. In the beginning it was assumed that the massive ‘money printing’ would lead to massive devaluations, which didn’t really happen as expected. Thats because the reaction in value percieptions in those currencies ended being more flexible than central bankers and economists initially feared.

The perception of value played a role in how long it took for people in the US to recognise the real estate bubble exploding in 07-08. It plays a role in really any bubble, and is why prices drastically plummet instead of taper. The value perception changes en masse, and bang, everybody runs for the door.

One more interesting example is the value perception comparison of essential workers in the COVID19 Pandemic compared to normal times.

Another option, is to remove yourself from the largest server (lemmy world), look at your options on other instances, theres hundreds. The label to the right of usernames should denote what instance people are connecting from.

Advantages of Choosing a Smaller Server

The experience of the ‘Local’ tab seems to be genuinely different from Lemmy World.

Lemmy World probably doesn’t look too different whether you sort by the ‘all’ tab or ‘local’ tab, so you really only have the ‘subscribe’ tab to find and hone your niche on the network.

Going for a smaller, but active in its own right, instance means you suddenly have a ‘local’ tab that is highly differentiated from the wider lemmy network, andgoing along with that its often a bit less political.

I’d use my own as an example here, but we’ve just had a major election in Australia, so its been pretty political lately, i’m expecting that to subside now that the chooks are counted.
