  • On and off linux user since ages past. Not the most linux guru type. I’m fine with opening the terminal and doing things as needed, but I still have to look up half the command, for example.

Anyway… windows / m$ finally just pissed me off so much I switched entirely to CachyOS / KDE for my daily driver. I tried a few distros with limited success before settling into that one. I wanted something that would have fairly fresh updates and be easy to setup for gaming. CachyOS really was a pretty seamless experience. Their “just make gaming work” button just made gaming work (I’m still on nvidia for the time being unfortunately).

There is one hiccup that is a common problem with all linux distros I have used for one reason or another. Wake from sleep is a thorn in linux’s side. The s3 deep sleep issue hasn’t been a problem on cachy as far as I can tell… but there is an feature of nvidia where it tries to save the vram components on sleep and then reinitialize them on wake using a daemon or a service… but sometimes this crashes (as far as I can tell) on sleep… so it goes to sleep… and the system wakes up fine… but it will never actually reactivate the screen… and it waits for video to kick in… so it’s essentially locking the system and I have to force reboot. It isn’t every single time, and the lastest patch of the driver seems to have made it less frequent, but I still don’t leave anything open I’m afraid of losing when I put the system to sleep because of it. If that could be fixed, it would be basically running perfectly.

I’ve basically gotten all my apps back up and running (with one windows only app that I don’t use regularly so it’s fine). Gaming has been great. I can’t think of much that I play that hasn’t worked by just clicking “play” in steam or heroic… and when they don’t work… it’s almost always just a quick trip to protondb to figure out which proton version I need to use and then it’s fine.

Actually I have found one other weird bug where discord sometimes keeps running, but won’t allow me to type at all. I can see incoming text, and close the app normally so it isn’t crashed, but I can’t type or paste into it until I restart it. It’s some kind of weird error with electron from what I understand but I haven’t done a deep dive to fix it yet.

So after fulling switching to linux and helping a couple other people also switch for daily driver, I would say we’re at the point where linux is ready for the “average user”. We’ve been creeping up on that for a while, but there’s been a lot of improvements to QoL in the last couple years that make it a feasible prospect for most people at this point. Some distros like linuxmint I feel like you could install and just use without every needing the terminal or having much of anything missing from “non-techie normal user” standpoint.

  • I find that UPP has less stuff in stock because I think they take in less stuff used, but everything I’ve gotten there has been cheaper than the other two, arrives faster, quality exceeds expectations, and is packaged to survive anything in shipping.

MPB has more frequent different stock… middle on prices. Reasonable shipping times and packaging. Quality is about as expected and they do show the exact item you’re getting ostensibly… I’ve had a couple of times when something wasn’t right on the page but it was obvious like “that’s not a lens, that’s a tripod”. Generally they’re fine though. They do a lot of volume I think.

KEH has the most consistent stock. If you want a canon 50mm lens… they will have 3 versions of it ALL the time. Shipping about the same as MPB. Prices usually seem a little higher in general. I don’t like that they don’t show the exact item you’re getting though, which is annoying… but their rating system has been accurate from what I have bought from them.

Regardless of who you decide to go with, they should all have some kind of warranty for 6-12 months depending on what you get which is nice. Also, all of them will have a “join our newsletter and get a discount” thing. So maybe set that up a day or two before hand (sometimes it takes a while to get the email). But 5 or 10% off is still nice to have.

  • It’s going to depend on a few things:

    1. What you think you’ll what to shoot
    2. Budget
    3. Size / weight requirements 4ish. Preferred brand or existing camera equipment

Personally I really like micro four thirds stuff for a mix of small but versatile. It’s also great because if you’re looking for bang for buck on a budget, older M43 cameras can be gotten used for really reasonable prices relatively.

  • I have not tried the “bargain” tier from KEH, but they are generally regarded as pretty okay to deal with.

But something else to consider might be MPB and UsedPhotoPro… they both show the actual item for sale, unlike KEH, and give descriptions of any additional considerations like moisture inside a lens. I’ve always gotten better deals on UPP and MPB than KEH. UPP is usually my go to if they have what I want. The have a lower volume but the stuff they show, I feel, is vetted really well and the deals are usually the best of the three. So if you’re looking at “bargain” tier on KEH for the price point you might find something at a higher tier on the other two in that same range.

  • Yeah. The tilting back lcd is a must for me, especially if there is no EVF. So I’ve been looking at the e-pl6 because I can get it fairly cheap with a warranty from a reseller. It doesn’t have all the features but it does look promising. I just keep looking at the ones for 100 more and they have some newer sensors and screens etc. Always go round and round on this stuff heh.

With the e-m10 and the gx80 having similar feature sets… what is making you stick with the e-m10 more?

  • For walking around… I want something I can walk around in the city. I don’t really do street photography per se since I don’t like photographing people… but I do like landscape and architectural and just documenting my life sort of things. I like nature walks and parks and such as well… not really hiking… more casual stuff.

My experience is moderate. I started with 35mm in the 80’s and 90’s and worked as an assistant to a portrait and event photog in the early 00’s. So I am not a pro but I’m not new to using a camera. Like I said, I have am om-d e-m5 ii now, which is great but I’d like something with a flip up screen and with a slimmer profile than the SLR body style of the e-m5 as well as a bit less weight. Since I already have several m43 lenses that cover a gamut of focal lengths (7.5mm FE, 14-42mm, 45mm f/1.8, 40-150mm) it feels like just slotting a small m43 body into my kit will be a no brainer. I plan on picking up some small primes soon as well, so all the more reason that sticking with just adding a new m43 body for versatility makes sense. I primarily shoot in manual mode, so having some physical controls to adjust those quickly would be nice, but since this is a secondary body it isn’t a deal breaker if it doesn’t have dual dials.

  • Yeah… some of the models that are popular have insane prices… and it’s gonna probably get worse what with the apocalypse and all. :(

Looks like a gx7 is about 300-350, a gx85 is 450-500, a gx8 is 600-750, and gx9 is 850-1050. Like… I see a G9 II on the page for 1300… IDK why some of those rangefinder models from several years ago are so high priced. smh.

  • Yeah… I’ve had my eye on the gx8 for a while but it’s still more than I want to pay. The gx9 is like $900-1000 used… way outside what I’m looking at.

I was originally looking at the olympus e-pl6 because it’s about 200… but I started seeing that for just a little more if I pushed I might get noticeable feature boost… so I’m considering a little more to get nicer features. The gx7 seems like it’s got good quality and checks most of the boxes (slightly larger than I wanted but that’s ok)… but I’m stuck in a cycle of comparing it to all the stuff in it’s range.

Have you used the gx7 at all to compare to the gx85 / gx9? Also, how is the focus peaking on lumix cameras. I’d like to be able to use manual lenses but I really like focus peaking to be an option.
