Do you like and get along with him? Would you hang out with him outside of work if you didn’t work with him? I think that’s pretty telling. Adults can be friends, but it is important to separate work life and personal life. Enjoying sometimes time and also depending on them to eat can be messy.

If you wouldn’t want to hang out with him outside of work if you didn’t work with him, I would keep some distance/buffer. If you actually enjoy hanging out outside of work, then just be cautious but it’s probably worth getting to know them.

Hanging out with older generations, especially around people who just have a lot of life experience, is super enriching. Might learn a lot.

Zero knowledge proofs. I’ve worked in the industry for a couple years now, and I’ve got a lot of hope it will actually help us fix the internet, stop spam bots, and allow for people to interact with better control over their data.

Ya why don’t they just ask for a better plan, or say some part doesn’t make sense to them. “Taking the guesswork out” to me means “I’m not convinced, go do more homework and explain this better”… Why can’t people just say that.

This is normally called “institutional knowledge” which is definitely a real thing, I don’t think it’s a marketing or HR buzzword. Though, a lot of the time it somewhat trivial things those things do add up. Institutional knowledge around things like how to deal with a finicky piece of specialized hardware, or what are the right words to convince your bosses boss to pay for you to go to a conference are pretty helpful. If you have an older “individual contributor” in your company that has been there for a while and hasn’t climbed the ladder, they might be a gold mine for that kinda info (they could also just be an ass)

I think looking through the comments on this post about AI stuff is a pretty good representation of my experience on lemmy. Definitely some opinions, but most people are pretty reasonable 🙂

Ya exactly! Or just sanity checking if you understand how something works, I use it a lot for that, or trying to fill in knowledge gaps.

OP asked what you self host that isn’t media, self hosted LLMs is something I find very useful and I didn’t see mentioned. Home assistant, pihole, etc, all great answers… But those were already mentioned.

I still have positive upvotes on that comment, and no one has flamed me yet, but we will see.

I think most people on here are reasonable, and I think local LLMs are reasonable.

The race to AGI and companies trying to shove “AI” into everything is kind of insane, but it’s hard to deny LLMs are useful and running them locally you dont have privacy concerns.

Local LLMs, I’m surprised no one brought that up yet. I’ve got an old GPU in my server, and I’m running some local models with openweb-ui for use in the browser and Maid for an Android app to connect to it.

I had one for about a year and went back to a normal phone. The crease didn’t bother me at all, had no problem with delamination… Really no problems with the phone at all. It was great for watching YT and multitasking, but in the end, it was just a really thick/bulky phone and it was annoying to deal with.

I think I’d really prefer a 5.5" screen, if I need something bigger, I’ll use a different device.
