I’ve only remember ever having audio dissappear during the really early Ubuntu days (We are talking like version 7 or 8). Now if you told me Linux has issues with audio crackling due to apps requesting absurd audio parameters, then yeah, that was a more recent and persistent issue that only recently seems to have gone away.

My (soon to be ex) bank recently decided to make everyone use their ID card number which can be obtained from many sources and does not change, a username with symbols and numbers and minimal length requirements which cannot be changed and a 4 digit pin code. No 2FA at all, so its only saving grace is that you get locked out at 3 tries.
I’m guessing they are trying to align everything to their legacy ATM pin code system instead of making the ATM system better.
I have no issue with spiders, but now that a small lizard took residence somewhere in the house there’s almost none left. And also no other insects as well.
All Android devices are Linux, it just happens to be the worst kind of Linux possible: one that entirely depends on proprietary drivers and is controlled by a company hellbent on closing it down through total dependence on their services.
In the Chinese Room scenario, cards with Chinese written on them are inserted into a box.
Inside there is a man who doesn’t understand Chinese but has a lookup list of which symbols to write as a response to every possible sentence you can write on the inserted card.
For anyone observing from outside the box it looks as if whatever is in the box is fluent in Chinese and can hold a conversation. But the man inside does not understand anything about Chinese.
This is used as an analogy to explain that machines, very much like the man in the box, do not actually understand the data they are fed, nor the data they output, no matter how human the response might seem.
It was an argument against the Turing test, which is about whether machines showing behaviour indistinguishable from a human is a sign that they can think.
The Chinese Room argument is that they must also show understanding of the data itself, rather than just human-like responses, to say that they think.

4·1 month agoWell, one is a GPU like this one that only has 2D support and it’s apparently perpetually stuck as experimental. The second one is a trackpad / numpad combo that someone else got working but because the code never got upstreamed it broke. The last one is an internal microphone that might have support in the kernel but it might be missing quirk flags or a small change in how it works.

8·1 month agoI admire people like this because even though there’s like 3 pieces of hardware I wish I could fix like this, I’ve got no clue where to start. And except for one, most are simpler devices than the M1 GPU.
I guess I’m a young woman now, if we go by the art of Metal Bringer.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•In a universe of enshitification, Linux is one of the few things that consistently gets better.
4·2 months agoThis only applies when you are talking about comparable things (E.g. two pieces of for-profit software that do the same thing). If they don’t seem to be the same thing, then you actually have to explain how would it happen if you want to be taken seriously.
Specially when we have examples of companies trying to tighten control over GPL software immediately getting forked and having to backtrack

Considering how 4chan is, a more likely outcome is that you’re getting called at least 3 different slurs because someone will either hate the slop, or perceive your insecurity about being unable to do art and decide to attack you.
