It’s widely agreed upon that the original fresco was not particularly valuable or artistically remarkable. It’s not like somebody messed up the Mona Lisa or a Rembrandt.
If I ever happen to be in the area, I’m definitely going to see the thing in person. It’s become quite a tourist magnet, and the town is happy about it.

It was also a work in progress. This was just meant to be colour blocking before details were added.
