Checked out a few other “minimalist” options from the list, and they are similar.
I’m looking for something that has a tray, and supports showing toplevels and workspaces without relying on compositor-specific IPC mechanisms. Something that can replace what comes built-in with Awesome.

Not wayland. With x11, you have many options.
Of course waybar is for Wayland, but maybe Wayland isn’t the best choice
Lots of options in https://github.com/rcalixte/awesome-wayland#widgets-bars-panels-etc though you kinda have to guess if they use GTK or not.
