I think the meta-joke is that the fictional artist of this fictional comic has kinda given up, and is bitterly phoning it in. 🙃

Indeed! I fell in love with that move back in the day. Luckily, Alex at least got to directly pilot the Starfighter – but our alien freedom-fighters in the comic strip are sadly only looking for remote controlled drone pilots.

Like the guy is unironically a treasonous criminal con-man so obviously under Russia’s (or more specifically Putin’s) influence it’s laughable.

All of that may be true, but it’s easily overlooked by his voters because they hate immigrants so very VERY much.
