2·5 months agoThanks for the tip about the Wormhole app. It looks like PairDrop also supports multi-recipient based on a brief visit to their website and cursory review of their FAQ (that is assuming multiple recipients can join a room). Still good to know about various alternatives, though, especially for asynchronous transfers.

1·5 months agoGood point about the word “safe.” A better way to phrase my question is, for sharing low sensitivity SFW photos w/ friends and/or family (e.g., a group photo at a bar or restaurant, or a family photo from Christmas morning), would you trust a tool like PairDrop or Destiny over “traditional” sharing methods such as texting the photo to everybody over SMS? (assuming we aren’t or can’t get on the same network, otherwise I’d probably just go w/ LocalSend)

2·5 months agoWas getting great use of the Destiny File Transfer client for a while.
Did you move on to another tool or just stop needing to transfer files?

2·5 months agoIs PairDrop safe for transferring photos from iPhone users to Android users and vice versa without having to be on the same wifi network? This is one thing I miss after ditching the iPhone. The website advertises this capability but I often wonder about sending stuff over the internet. I know about LocalSend, though I haven’t convinced many of my friends & family to install that app, either.

3·5 months agoYup, and for SSDs specifically, I’ve read online that once you’ve stored info on the device unencrypted, then down the road you use a software tool like shred, there’s no way to guarantee nothing is left in the clear because of wear leveling, so it’s best to always encrypt them before we start storing anything on them.

3·5 months agoRegarding encryption, I’m no lawyer, but I always figure if I were ever wanted by the authorities, it would at least give me a choice whether or not to comply. On the other hand, anything that’s not encrypted may as well already be compromised. The other thing encryption buys you is peace of mind if and when you ever sell those drives on the secondary market.

2·5 months agoThat’s pretty dope. Would you mind posting a photo or two of your 4xSSD setup? Also, what are they hooked up to, a mini PC?

1·1 year agowindows… has not had an issue with anything I’ve wanted to do.
Then you should use Windows. It sounds like it works for you.
I offered up a counter-anecdote to your anecdote. I did not mean to invalidate your experience.
That said, I’m triggered by statements like, “Linux isn’t ready,” because they aren’t conducive to productive conversation. A better way to think of it is, “Linux/Windows/<Insert OS here> isn’t for me.” Linux doesn’t have to be for everybody. Likewise for Windows or any other OS. I think it’s great that we have so many choices.

3·1 year agoCrazy how different our experiences have been. Over the last decade I’ve hopped from Ubuntu to Mint, Debian, Fedora, Nobara, and currently on Bazzite. Never had an issue connecting to the internet. (shrugs)

21·1 year agoLots of good answers here already. I’ll just add that Jon Stewart recently did a great segment that touches on this. Basically, he says if everything the government does is “OmG nAzIz FaScIsTz TrAiToRz!!!” then people who aren’t already paying attention will continue tuning it out. I forget at which time in the video he gets to this point, but honestly the whole 20-minute video is worth a watch.

5·1 year agomaking someone else’s tragedy about them
esteem boosts
Interesting take. When someone says they are blessed or grateful for whatever reason (even in the context of another’s tragedy), I see it more as acknowledging how much of our own circumstances are outside of our control, a perfectly normal and healthy thing to recognize and nothing to do with boosting one’s own self esteem.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is canceling student loan debt considered stealing?English
1·1 year agoFractional reserve banking does not mean the debt does not exist. The debt very much exists. Nobody takes out a loan and just sits on it. As soon as the loan is created, goods and services are traded. At the end of the day, each party to downstream transactions can go to the bank and withdraw the balance of their account in cash. The fractional reserve system only works as long as not everyone does this at once.

2·1 year agoWhen a borrower becomes insolvent and the loan cannot be repaid, the lender records it on their books as a loss. They cannot just pretend the loan never happened.
Of course, now we’re mixing subjects because OP asked about student loan forgiveness, which would necessarily come out of tax payers’ pockets (not the same as when a lender takes the L because the loan cannot be repaid).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is canceling student loan debt considered stealing?English
2·1 year agoThe image is a poor analogy because unlike when someone creates an image or any form of art, when a borrower takes out a loan, the lender records a receivable as an asset and the borrower’s account as an offsetting liability. Once this happens, the loan cannot then just be magically erased—somehow, some way, the lender must be made whole again. In the case of loan forgiveness, it comes out of the tax payers’ pockets. Whether that’s theft or not is a separate topic, and I think another commenter covered it well by comparing it to any other government program or subsidy.

Is the starter pack not exactly that?
