GitHub is kind of a cloud service, but it isn’t a server host. Cloud development is just more…abstracted than traditional web development. Instead of controlling a computer and choosing how to store files and managing ports and firewalls and making backups and serving requests and redirecting to closer servers and making sure you have enough computing power but not too much computing power and all that stuff, you instead just give Amazon/Microsoft/Google your code and data and pay them to do all that for you.

14·2 years agoI have my phone number on my personal website—never had any adverse consequences. In fact, the only two calls I’ve gotten have both been at my work number which isn’t on there somehow. One to ask a genuine question and one to give me 30 bucks in appreciation.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day?
6·2 years agoUm, but actual Irish-Americans love eating corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s day. It’s racist to celebrate your heritage? Or just to try things from other people’s cultures?
Thank you for this knowledge. This will honestly help me eat more chicken instead of less-messy frozen meals.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you *do* online these days? Where do you spend the most time?
5·2 years agoI mostly don’t. I write, program, play a game, catch up on work, spend time with family, etc. instead. I’m kind of glad because I’ve noticed life has genuinely improved since taking a step back from the Internet’s toxicity.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why in the year 2024 and with all the knowledge humans have now do people still believe in religion?
1·2 years agoYou’re presupposing there was nothing at one point. We know that is the case for the physical universe because otherwise entropy would have ended actions an eternity ago. An eternal being not subject to the laws of thermodynamics has no logical need for a beginning.

It “should” be:
You can make the þ sound by itself without using your voice. It just sounds like air coming out of a tire. You can’t make the ð sound without also making a vowel sound.
Ðough historically the þorn was often used for boþ as well, and it’s definitely tricky for modern Eŋlish speakers to distiŋuish.
