It’s simply the act of inserting something where it doesn’t belong or doesn’t quite work, i.e. not forcing it upon the reader’s brain (or beaming it into their skull), but forcing it into the sentence. It’s the same construction that you would use when saying “forcing a square peg into a round hole”.

It’s not a character in the modern English alphabet and is only used nowadays in Icelandic, so I think “forcing” is totally appropriate.
