Usually, they are rebranding after a revolution with the goal to establish a democratic or communist government. But then the inherent weakness of those forms of government leads to internal instability due to outside influence and/or internal corruption. The new and unexperienced government gets more and more extreme in an attempt to defend or due to simple greed. The original idea becomes more and more distant until not even a faint shadow of it is left.
The boycott was about something, normal users don’t give any fucks about: Third party apps basically exclusively used by moderators to automate banning and censoring.
Users were also already pissed about being banned from subs based on which other subs they are in.
And the boycott was mostly experienced by users as moderators closing down subs without caring at all about what the actual users think about that. Sub mods in general already had a reputation as being narcistic and unreasonable to the point that they there and still are used as a meme.
So naturally, user sympathy was rather limited. In addition to lack of user sympathy, Reddit was never actually at risk of being replaced by anything else. Where would the users go to?
Lemmy and others are the niche’s niche; I still add Reddit (not Lemmy) to my web searches because that’s still where the content is. Reddit is massive and for most topics there just is nowhere else to go to. The network effect is real; size actually does matter a lot. It’s the same reason, YouTube can get away with their enshittification.
For most people, therapy is the only way to speak with a person who isn’t like most of the commenters here.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You randomly get a free 50k no catch what do you do with it?
1·12 days agoYeah, should really have gone for 128 GiB instead of just 64 in 2024. On the other hand, DDR5 RAM training really is uncomfortably slow. Always looks like it’s dead when there’s just a black screen for half a minute before the actual boot happens.

2·12 days agoYeah, definitely nice to have - but not glamorous or life-changing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You randomly get a free 50k no catch what do you do with it?
7·13 days agoNot if you have a mortgage over 200 to 500 thousand Dollars because you bought a house on credit (which is how most people buy a house because that really is an amount, even the well-earning middle class needs decades to accumulate).
It’s nice, but not life-changing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What skill did you learn that was not worth the effort?
10·16 days agoI can’t learn skills I don’t like to learn. As time wasted having fun is time well spent, I never learned a skill not worth the effort of learning it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Suppose the last movie you saw and the last videogame you played had a crossover. What would that world look like?
1·17 days ago“7 Days To Die” in the world of “Avatar: The Way of Water” would probably be a pretty good mix. Not sure, how feasible it is to create Pandora POIs with the voxel system - but I would like to see them genuinely try.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What thing would be nice to have but can't have it because we can't trust people?
2·17 days agoCould we somehow solve this while still also using billions to bomb children?
It might not be the most important thing for you. But national security really depends a lot on bombing brown schoolgirls once in a while.

111·21 days agoLouis is fine and does the good political work, no one else is willing to do. But I already am a pirate and against copyright and patents - which is way more anti-corporations than his stance. So there is no point in watching him preach.
I still watch his other videos when I stumble upon them. He just doesn’t do them that often anymore.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What fandom has/creates the best fangames (not romhacks)?
1·24 days agoThief. The best fan-made game is The Dark Mod (actually a standalone game; not a mod). There are hundreds of missions of varying quality.
Also, OpenTTD is a free open-source game implementing the concept of Transport Tycoon Deluxe from scratch.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Multilingual people of Lemmy who learned a language (or multiple) as adults, how did you do it?
2·24 days agoI started by reading the English WWW and then participating in English forums. All video games had synchronization in my native language. But I started to deliberately play them in English with subtitles. And then I started to watch more and more videos and movies in English (with subtitles when available). Now I only need subtitles occasionally to offset unclear speech.
Starting with text makes looking up unknown words practical. Games most often let you take your time to read text. Cutscenes can be problematic early on. But games often support setting different languages for audio and text/subtitles.
Being in an environment speaking the new language would probably be the fastest way. What did not help at all was having English taught in School. Memorizing vocabulary and working through artificial text book did not work at all for me. Only when the internet entered my life years later, did I actually get a hang of the language.
P.S.: English is the universal language right now. Even Chinese children learn it in school. I think, it’s possible to get away with only speaking English in basically any industrialized country. Not everyone will be able to understand you. But there will always be someone who can translate.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do YOU think men commit more crime than women?
6·1 month agoFor violent crimes it’s probably just that men are on average stronger and more aggressive (at least they were a few decades ago).
For white collar crimes, higher positions with more criminal opportunity still are usually held by men. More opportunity means more abuse of opportunity.
On the low economic end, poor men are less likely to be able to benefit from help for internal and external reasons than poor women. So survival crimes are more likely to be done by men, too.
Men on average seem to also feel more the need for speed and are more risk affine. So they likely get more speeding tickets.Different reasons for different types of crimes. There probably are also crimes that are more often committed by women or where the gender gap is insignificant. But nobody talks about crimes committed by women. So no idea whether women are even capable of committing crimes at all.
That’s easy: If it’s a service reasonably expected to be present on most desktop systems, it’s part of systemd or will eventually be.
Gentoo will always be there when you want to settle down knowing exactly what you want.

It is the best explanation I read so far. AI seems to be generally good at explaining stuff.
