  • This is just my opinion. Lemmy doesn’t conform to many of the current standards of reduced friction for the user. Before joining you have to figure out that there are more than one servers that you could join and make a decision which one you want to be on and depending on your choice you have to take a mini interview and/or be approved by someone to join. After joining you probably either deal with an ugly page design that someone created like in the hi5/GeoCities days or you have to choose one of the milion apps that are available for it. While browsing you have to figure out that there are duplicate communities and figure out which ones you want to subscribe to and figure out what kind of sorting works best for you on your main page. And in order to discover more communities you go to All where you see a bunch of unhinges stuff that either you learn how to block or you ignore.

By the time you are having a seamless experience you have truly past the test of being somewhere on the spectrum, because no normal person will ever put up with all this, as could be seen with the user gain of mastodon vs bluesky after Twitter went to shit. The platform with less friction even though more closed and proprietary gained more users.

  • I feel like jokes are a reflection on the people making them, based on their own experiences and biases. Jokes also need to be rooted in some kind of reality we all agree on in order to subvert and become funny.

A dumb joke about cats not wanting toys still tells me the owner has no idea or doesn’t care. And I’ve met these owners many times before. So many people see their pets as furniture and understand nothing about them, their personalities or their needs.

  • I’d say Sarah doesn’t know much about cats or is just lazy.

Cats love toys, but it needs to be engaging. They love their pray to feel alive, to move, to hide. A crumpled up piece of paper on a string tied to a stick works wonders. That means the owner needs to participate, but most don’t. Also cats are crepuscular so for maximum success keep play limited the evening or morning. You might be surprised how much of a hunter your cat actually is.

  • Many people do not live up to this level of maturity that you seem to expect of them. And many others can’t beat the dopamine and quick gratification that tiktok provides. As such, tiktok attracts people of all ages and associating it with kids is, and has been for a while, an outdated view, only held by people who don’t actually engage with the platform.

Outdated views and disconnection from present reality is represented by the old man screaming at clouds meme.

  • I was in a similar situation as you, with an existing docker solution, looking for something easier to manage. Yunohost had this hype behind it that I couldn’t resist. At first it did seem easier with the official apps, but as soon as I needed anything outside the set boundary the dream collapsed. The final nail for me was not being able to get smb working.

Good thing I had kept my docker setup safe so it was easy to revert to it. It’s more of a pain, but it’s also more versatile and capable so I have no better choice at the moment. Portainer helps a lot.
