  • frankly I think if everyone on the planet over a certain age took a heroic dose of mushrooms, just once, we could get about 90% of the way to global human enlightenment. A little ego death, as a treat.

Unfortunately, with the draconian laws against psychedelics (how dare you try and escape this reality when we’ve made it so pleasant!), this will almost certainly never come to pass.

  • I was gullible.

Met online on an app, thought we hit it off after our first date IRL, I was over at his place every chance I could to cuddle and watch movies together. After a few months they broke up with me via text on Christmas, saying they didn’t actually mean any of the things they said and that they didn’t feel right continuing.

That was my first and last “real” relationship, and I’ve largely given up on dating this past year or so. It’s getting more dangerous to be openly gay in the US (I have no illusions about what happens after they run out of trans people and immigrants to scapegoat), and I’ve been learning more and more that I simply don’t mesh well with others, so I suppose it’s for the better.

  • Yes, actually I’ve ceased actively looking for a partner for the better part of a year now. Little has changed, except I now have fewer apps on my phone. (I do still maintain one dating profile on an open source app but I check it on the order of twice a year because the app is dead, feel free to guess which)

More room for memes is cool, I guess

also I’ve tried solicited advice and it rarely helps either, so I don’t really care. It’s on me whether I follow it, and terrible advice is usually not subtle to everyone reading in a public forum. Do your worst, none of us are getting any younger.

  • REISUB basically does the same thing but slightly more gracefully. It will still reboot through basically any lockup (I have yet to encounter one it didn’t work on), but it gives your machine the chance to settle some things before cutting the power.

If a Linux machine locks up or freezes completely, use REISUB to restart it more gently than pushing the Power Button.

Hold down Alt and the SysReq (Print Screen) keys, and then type R E I S U B, with 2-3 second delays between the key presses to give the commands a better chance to complete.

R: Switch the keyboard from raw mode to XLATE mode
E: Send the SIGTERM signal to all processes except init
I: Send the SIGKILL signal to all processes except init
    S: Sync all mounted filesystems
U: Remount all mounted filesystems in read-only mode
B: Immediately reboot the system, without unmounting partitions or syncing

I suppose if you wanted to be extra quick and liked living dangerously you could just do alt + sysrq + R + B (I’m assuming switching the keyboard mode is necessary for getting the other commands to work during a complete lockup, but I could be wrong, you might only need B). But I wouldn’t recommend it, REISUB is plenty fast for me.

There are other commands too, like alt + sysrq + F to summon the OOM killer.

Lastly, and perhaps most critically, it also feels way cooler than just holding a single button. Comme ça:
