nikita@sh.itjust.worksto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What industry do you work in and what are the LPT the general public should know about it?2·1 year agoTIL. Thanks.
In Canada, the drinking age is 19 everywhere except Quebec where it’s 18, so in Ottawa 18 year olds just go across the river to buy liquor.

If you want to build the best building you gotta know every detail about how it’s made, which you can only get close to by hiring competent consultants (i.e.: architects, engineers, etc) Because if you’re not specific about what you want, you can bet your ass you’re getting the cheapest version.
nikita@sh.itjust.worksto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What industry do you work in and what are the LPT the general public should know about it?6·1 year agoI read that in Alabama (or maybe Mississippi, I can’t recall) you can drink alcohol while driving. You just can’t be above the blood alcohol concentration limit.
That sounds awesome. I’ll try it out some time.
Do you know about Timberborn? That’s another one that looks cool.
That’s what sucks about Civ (and EU4, HOI4 and the like for that matter) — once you figure out how it works and you start winning it becomes boring in single player.
And then for multiplayer it’s hard to find someone committed to playing for long stretches of time consistently.
IMO games where losing is fun is where it’s at, like Crusader Kings, Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress.
nikita@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are the best alternatives to Amazon for buying new (or used) books?4·1 year agoFacebook marketplace for used books and used goods in general. Lots of good quality basically new stuff on there for cheap. I guess because so many Canadians just buy stuff without thinking and then it piles up and they need to make space.
Some neighbourhoods also have some boxes on posts (not sure what they’re called, they resemble mailboxes) where people can take and give away books for free as well.
You can also type ‘bookstores’ in google maps and seeing what local stores will come up.
nikita@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think of the culinary industry ?4·1 year agoCan confirm. Was a waiter for about 6 months. Everyone there at the very least smoked cigs, weed, drank, and got completely shitfaced almost everyday after the shift. I imagine for cooks they could do it during their shift. Heard meth and crack are very popular too but I never seen it myself.
I think it’s the combo of the stress, the low salary, and high turnover. The ones that stay develop coping mechanisms. I imagine a few get lucky and get to work at fancy places too.
Plus the insane power consumption for such a marginally useful feature. Especially given that it’s on by default for everyone using google (as I understand)
It’s almost like the feature is not ready but they need to show off to their investors anyway. At the cost of user experience and the environment.
At least with ChatGPT you have to consciously go to their website and use, rather than being the first result of a fucking internet search.

nikita@sh.itjust.worksto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy?3·1 year agoThough it’s only tangentially related to your inquiry, you should check out improvethenews.org
It’s basically what you are looking for but with news stories, though it’s primarily focused American news. It allows you to read the different narratives without actually visiting cancer news sites like Sky news.
nikita@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a common occurrence in your hobby that you think shouldn't be?10·1 year agoGreat question.
For me it’s homebrewing. It’s so simple yet there is so much disinformation and people encouraging others into following old wives tales that aren’t necessarily proven to do anything.
Also, so many anglophones using imperial measurements it’s ridiculous. Metric makes way more sense especially for volumes.
I’ve had to go through and write my own procedure because it’s just ridiculous otherwise.
It’s so condensed with the way the scenes are edited together with no transitions. It really doesn’t hold your hand with the slang and jargon either.
I watched it last year but I feel like I should rewatch it just to understand it better.
I had really bad panic attacks at some point and I decided the best way to deal with it was to ditch everything in my life and move back in with my parents. It was really shitty for my partner who kept living over while I was basically broken for half a year.
Admittedly though, I was really freaked out because I didn’t know what panic attacks were.
I’d like to think religious people don’t necessarily believe or remember word-for-word what happened to Jesus or Muhammad or whoever but they do learn lessons from the readings that they apply in their lives in a positive way. Or at least their intentions are positive.
It’s a routine group-based literary text analysis that gives people a reason to be together, not unlike a high school first language class.
If you wanna get old school sociological about it, you could say it fulfills a social need for cohesion that non practicing people replace by placing increased importance to other routine activities such as sports watching or working.
Yup.
Sometimes I catch myself thinking that we are more modern than we actually are, that we have already moved past these issues. It’s important to remember that civil rights, feminism, and LGBTQ rights are not topics to be relegated to the history books. They are as alive now as they were in the 60s for today, like yesterday and tomorrow, is a constant fight for our rights.
Thats why I don’t do that shit to people.
Who am I to question someone’s spirituality if it makes them happpy and they practice in a healthy way and it doesn’t negatively affect the people around them?
nikita@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•At what age do you think is too old to be living with parents?17·1 year agoIn Greece it’s common for children to stay with their parents past 30. Your conflict is a cultural one.
My advice is to not worry about it and not feel ashamed. There are plenty of reasons to live with one’s parents, especially these days with the high cost of living. I’m sure your peers understand this.
In fact, the money you save on living expenses can potentially be used to buy yourself a home in the future, instead of perpetually paying rent like the rest of us.
For real though, what happens if you don’t say the words?
