  • Yeah, they’ve done this on this one particular site that I like to read, one old (hilarious) celebrity blogger who made a new home on [redacted]. [redacted] is pure shit. I dunno exactly what they’re doing but the ads they serve up are largely local rather than third party - and they’re served up so aggressively the site is all but unreadable on my phone. So ads are crazy in-your-face despite having adblock on the phone itself and a Pi-Hole! Just to keep reading the guy I like I had to set up a shortcut that loads it in reader view to bypass all the bullshit and fuck knows how long that will last before they somehow figure out how to block reader view.

Edit: I probably shouldn’t be giving them ideas, lol.

  • Well, now you can’t say all the older not chronically online fans you know rave about it, because I’m older, not chronically online and I think it sucks.

Edit: I’ve just found out that “not chronically online” means “too incompetent to do shit online” so my apologies for misunderstanding. I thought it just meant, you know, not being online a lot. Like me. I’ve posted to Lemmy about 10 times in the past 5 days. I have literally no other social media accounts on the Internet. I was on Facebook for like a week in 2014 before I noped out. BUT! I can make an account on Lemmy, so my opinions about Star Trek are clearly only informed by being a chronically online mouth-breather.

  • It would only happen because of their sense of self-preservation. They can build all the bunkers they want but there is no way to be completely independent of the giant external machine that keeps us all alive. Even if you were a nihilist like your average billionaire, you can’t just say fuck everybody else, I got mine. You depend on food being grown and delivered, you depend on drugs being made and doctors and dentists to fix you up. You depend on a billion people not actively seeking your death. You depend, most of all, on money not being worthless. If nobody has money but you, then you also have no money.

  • That’s pretty low for an ambulance ride in the stupidest fucking country, tbh. Probably the actual bill after her insurance company “paid” for $3600 of it.

This is the scam of health “insurance” in America: you get a bill that’s stupid. Like “on a different planet” stupid. Your insurance colludes with the hospital to pay none of it (but tell you they did) and you get to pay the actual balance. The actual balance is also stupid, but just ordinary stupid.

  • I’m in the “been working with Linux since the 90s” gang so I call vim vi and nano pico and when I started there was a coolness factor to be considered. I was incredibly uncool so I used whatever I wanted, including pico - I mean you used pine for email back in the day and the interface was nearly identical, so whatever.

But I did want to be at least a tiny bit cooler, so I learned vi in a fairly rudimentary fashion. I can edit, jump, delete, search, replace, copy and paste - oh, and I can exit. I’ve spent so much time using vi, that my brain doesn’t even have to think about exiting, not even whether I want to write or not. It just happens like second nature. It’s actually gotten to where nano seems unduly burdensome to me.

But really, I prefer an IDE for programming. CLI editors will always be for configuration files and shell scripts to me.
